jb3 is the cuisine that reigns supreme.

Because nothing says "I have lots of money and am sort of confused as to how to spend it" like Bose.

Maybe 2004 will be the year laptops disappeared from the taping scene ...

do I hear 2005 anyone?

meh at least the laptop does other things. i can justify spending 2 grand for a machine that does as much as a laptop, but for one that only records concerts...not so much...

So it's safe to say that there isn't going to be an affordable portable alternative to the jb3 any time soon huh ?  I'm talking below $500, for recording over 16/44.

Looks like I'm carrying around my lappy for another year ??

The edirol R-1 actually looks like it might be something in that ballpark.

if doug is able to mod it (as he has mentioned on his board he is looking at) to take a digi signal....the R1 could be this years UA5 at that price point...

Yeah but would it be bit perfect?  And there would still be a 2 gig limit. :(

and 24/44.1 seems kinda silly. and yeah, youd be getting "tape flip" style gaps when the 2 gb card ran out and youd have to switch to a new one.

And why does 24/44.1 seem silly? If you study Nyquist's theorem, as has been pointed out in several discussions I've been involved in with DSP engineers, you'll find that the sampling rate doesn't matter nearly as much after about 40K. The big band for the buck is going from 16 to 24 bits.

Looking at what a lot of tapers are using for mics, they really aren't going to be able to tell the difference between 24/48 or 24/96 and 24/44.1.

We spend a lot of time talking about specs and theoretics, yet we spend so little time really trying to experiment and understand why things work the way they do in the field.

2 GB is about 2 hours give or take a few minutes. Only rarely do I go to a show where pulling out a card and putting in a new card would be troublesome. In fact, most of the time the set break would be where you could do your card swap. Now, that's not to say that you won't end up on occasions running close or out of space at 24/44.1, but it's not going to be the norm, it will be the exception.

Anyhow, this isn't targeted directly at you, so don't take it like that.

That'd probably be the push I need to go to 24-bit.  Hmmmmm...gonna have t ostay up to date on the Oade Bros thread.

Now that I'm doing 24-bit recording, I find it amazing. As sweet of a A/D converter the AD2K+ was, keeping things in 24-bit is something it couldn't touch.

Going to 24-bits is like adding omni mics to your rig. Once you do it, you don't want to go back.

got the little ARCHOS today just to test out....if it works, GREAT, if not, I already have a HD music player...

Dis you get the Gmini 220 or the Gmini 400?

The 400 looks pretty decent.....doesn't it record to wav. 16/44.1?  that's good enough for me.
