Marantz pmd671 WAV file/form question
« on: January 20, 2011, 03:19:25 PM »
here is a picture of a wav file i recorded with the marantz 671 last weekend.  every wav file appears to look compressed or trimmed... it doesn't look right at all...  i have checked the settings, but i must be missing something.  the gain was set ok.  any help is great.

thanks!

Doesnt look too bad - but looks like you may have brickwalled somewhere before reaching max gain...which, if Little Feat is still as loud as they used to be, is entirely possible.

Assuming you had the 671s mic attenuator engaged?

all of the settings on top of the recorder were set off, such as ANC, limiter, etc.

maybe i am missing some presets in the digital (led) function?

the previous owner used it for court reporting.  no telling what settings they wanted.

Assuming you had the 671s mic attenuator engaged?

i recorded an acoustic show in a small club and it did the same thing.  so, it wasn't the band...

I compared to another recording of the same show (4 channel schoeps w/ V3) and the sound quality was hardly discernable between the two, but you can tell my recording has a compressed sound.

95% sure it was set to 'flat'.  the middle setting.

Thats not an option on the Mic Attenuator...

its either 0db or -20db

You should always have the -20db engaged with that unit - acoustic band or otherwise...

you've saturated the dynamic range I think- the level at any gig with any mic is going to be really serious- you need the attenuator to "step back" and get a bit of headroom.
Quite an interesting concept though- I recently recorded some short footage with my wife's iPhone (just for a laugh) and converted it with Quicktime Pro so I could import it into ProTools and it looks much the same. Only in this case- there are NO controls to do anything about it and the source (birds in trees) was really quiet.

-20db setting worked.

i think the manual level setting got switched to ANC for a recording last night.  Not a big fan of the little plastic cover, but i've learned i need to use it now.

I started using the little plastic cover.
