Uploading to the archive question.
« on: February 02, 2005, 12:31:15 PM »
I tried uploading to the archive for the first time at my friends house and we followed
all the steps , downloaded SmartFTP connected,  selected the files to upload and the same thing
happened every time!
When we select the flac files from the HD it goes to put the files in to upload it
only puts the fingerprint txt, the info txt and only track 1 then it took over 30 minutes to upload track 1!!
We let it go thinking maybe it just shows those files only and uploads all of the files then shows the rest when it
was done, nope after over 30 mins it started on track 2 at this rate it's going to take 7-8 hours for a 3 hour show??!!
I assume this is not normal. Like I said we followed everything step by step from the naming standards to the tutorial for SmartFTP. We are uploading on DSL and the upload speed is at 32-34 kbps which I'm told is fast?! We have downloaded many shows some at almost 3 hours and they all have been done at around 30 minutes.  What is the deal? any thoughts?              Thanks
Also if anyone would like to upload these for me I will send you the discs( 4 flac discs total)

Yup, just like Brad said over at the archive message boards...that's normal. Why so urgent? They're gonna be there FOREVER... :)

That's about right - most aDSL lines are capped ato 40 KB/s upload, with a practical speed of mid 30s KB/s.

Lately my uploads have been taking a lot longer than normal. I think the servers are getting bombarded with uploads. I see Phil Lesh is having all the Phil and Friends shows uploaded and thats  a large amount of shows. I usually just switch the files to the cue and let it go sometimes it doesnt take that long others it goes at a snails pace. I would say if you want to upload something just let it go. You can still surf and do whatever you want on the net, it will just be a little slower.

This is weird I just tried to reply and it said the fourm is either missing or I do not have access???

I guess there is no rush I have been trying to upload these since that week of the show and have a bunch of people waiting for it.
I just thought that the upload speed would be a bunch faster huh lesson learned.
I now have a new appreciation for people who upload all the time!!
I guess we will try again and just let it go. One thing though shouldn't it load up the MD5 file along with the other txt files or does it do that last?
Thanks all for the help +T

That makes sense about the Phil shows. I guess we will just start uploading during our super bowl party and let em go.

Thanks guys for clearing this up I am new to high speed (I don't have it yet) and I just thought that upload/download time was about the same.
I will post links to these shows when they are done.

One more question
From what I have read each flac disc should be uploaded in a folder (exp. particel2005-01-21.flac16) when I go to put the files in SmartFTP it will not let me choose just the folder it only lets me put the contents of the folder in, is this correct? The reason I ask is because when I go through the tutorial for SmartFTP in the top left where the directory is they have subfolders to choose the files to be uploaded.
When I do it there is only the audio-uploads.org file and I can only right click then choose upload> direct > select files is this the correct way to go?
I'm sorry for the newbie questions I just don't want to start the upload and find out I wasted my time.

Is there a "create folder" function in SmartFTP? Try creating the particle2005-01-21.flac16 on the audio-uploads server, and then moving your individual files into it that way...

is there a smartftp faq somewhere?  i've never used ftp before, and i'm for the first time trying to upload a show to LMA.  I created my files, my text file, my md5 file, put them all in one folder, opened up smartftp, connected to LMA, and dragged the folder into the smartftp window.  now nothing is happening and it says the folder has zero bytes when i right click on it and click on properties.

what am i doing wrong?  what do i need to do to make it upload?
