How does the 722 behave when the battery dies?
« on: February 28, 2005, 08:57:12 PM »
I'm specifically interested in what happens to the current file when the battery voltage drops below the low battery threshold, shutting the unit off. Is the interrupted file (or files, if doing mono) recoverable? I haven't tested this yet and was wondering if someone else had already. I haven't gotten a long runtime battery just yet.
Out of the game … for now?

It's Julienne, a thin rectangular cut. Typically 1/8"x 1/8" to 1/4"x 1/4" thick and a couple inches long. My Larouse is at work, so I can't tell you who's wife or mistress it is named for.

I got a question, when are these gonna drop enough so mere mortals can buy one ?

Well you could whore yourself out to 500 chicks for 10 bucks apiece, or 50 fat chicks for 100 bucks apiece.  Hey fat chicks need love too, but they have to pay.

with that plan you could get a 744!

hmmmm... When you look at the competition, these really are about priced right. I find it amazing what has happened in the DAT world. I've had a tough time getting rid of some of my DAT gear. It's totally amazing the price at which some of it sold for. Really makes me sad when AD2K+ units go for 500-700 and DA-P1 units are now selling in the 300-500 dolllar range... sad, sad, sad...

But then I keep thinking of the money I'm saving by not having it on tape. Of course I am putting it on DVD AND CD, so I'm not sure I'm really saving any money.

cd's are about 10 bux per 50. and dvd's are about 50 cents a piece, if you can fit a whole show onto one dvd, you just saved a ton of money per show that you wouldve spent on dat tapes,

a normal shows costs about 5 bucks for me to put onto dat tape, thats 10 dvd's 8)

Has anyone actually tested this?  The JB3 is supposed to do the same, but doesn't always.  Now, I expect SD implemented properly on pro gear v. the consumer JB3, but...one never knows.

lol  Just lemme know when you're ready to buy/loan me a 722, Tim, and I'll send you my addy so I can test.  BTW, I'm sure it'll take many weeks of testing - possibly months - to ensure I'm comfortable with the test results.   ;)

the battery run down/graceful shutdown has worked fine for me in the ever demanding living room test

the other variation on this issue is the "ungraceful" shutdown...in that case the file wasnt corrupted when the power was yanked mid recording..the drive did come up and complain about needing to run a filesystem check, but the file was still readable...that may have been a lucky case, and not something that would happen everytime

Thanks, Boogie, appreciate it.

I wonder if the phantom would drop in voltage causing mic distortion prior to it shutting the unit down.....hmmmm.

interestingly, i just checked the files from the wilco show i taped with michael miller's 722.  i ran it with the auto-split at 2gigs.  because michael's recorder has firewire issues and has to be sent back to sound devices, i had to transfer the files to my comp using the digi out to my sound card and record them in real time.  i started wavelab recording about 15 secondsafter the 7 series started playing back with wavelab set to split at 1999 mb.  the 7 series jumps to playbak the next file after 1 is done with a small little gap.  so the first split appears in wavelab as dead space in the file.  there are no lost samples and the files merged fine.  but the left channel had 1 more sample than the right channel so i had to delete the dead space separately in each channel.

It doesn't seem to matter at all, but i wonder if the 7 series is off by 1 sample in each channel or this is something in my computer.

it might just be on playback of split files from the 722

probably.  one sample shouldn't make any difference anyways right?
