Hey guys,
I would like to know what the best 24-bit AD chip on the market is for sampling rates up to 32k.
I'm currently doing a design using a TI ADS1271 which claims 109dB SNR and we've seen 106 dB with a prototype board. This is the best we could find but still we're seeing 6-8 bits of noise.
Which got me to wondering if there really is such a thing as 24-bits or if it was all hype. A good friend assures me there is and that you guys could set me straight.

You may be able to put 24bit components in a JB3, but you'll also need software that can process and write it.
My guess is that the time and expense would make it a dead issue, with Edirol R-09s and MT2496s and such surfacing for not to much scratch.

I won't go back to the MT, it's just so cheaply made. The R-09 has a huge list of issues still. I just want a 24bit JB3 :-)
Edit: The R9 problems are all hear-say, I can't officially speak for myself on the product. My friends seem to like everything about it when it works though.

Perhaps Im wrong - but I think the JB3 chip specs support 24 bit - but I think they only implemented 16 in the JB3 design...

I looked into hacking the JB3 a while back. Creative went to lengths to make it hard to hack. things like a proprietary file system. There is a serial port to the (ARM) processor and some folks hone tapped into it but they didn't get much further than some screen writes.

I don't know what ARM processor is being used, but in the ARM9 and ARM11 that we use at work, the speed of the serial connection is not wonderful. It's main purpose is to allow bootcode to be uploaded so that the ARM comes to life. I've never seen the insides of a JB3, but it's also quite prossible that the ARM isn't doing all the heavy lifting in which case it doubles the effort in 'hacking' it. There are SPI, UART, GPIO, and a few other interfaces into the ARM, so depending on what Creative used, there are a host of issues people would have to overcome.
At this point I think people would be better served by looking at what other devices are in the marketplace and seeing if any of the 24-bit devices meet their needs better than the aging JB3.

Problem is, there aren't really too many options without getting quickly into the $1k+ department.
the MT seems ideal for me but after one exploded in my friend's hand, I'll not buy one.
Anyway, we digress from the original question which I cannot answer but i'll +t gearhead for bearing with our 'jack.
