Title: Advice for purchasing 4021's?
Post by: bhoy on May 18, 2013, 12:01:55 AM
Hi all -

I'm looking into purchasing a pair of DPA 4021's to add to my DPA collection.  90% stealth, 10% stand work.  I figure the side exit might make this easier?  Am I wrong?

Can anyone point me to a suggested purchase place?  I see B&H has them individually for $1765, or the 3521 kit for $3899.  The kit would ensure a matched stereo pair.   Are you allowed to bargain/haggle prices for these?  I guess I could also wait and see if a pair ever turns up in the Yard Sale section.  No immediate rush to purchase these.

Also, the mics are expensive and it seems crazy to mod them, but, do people trim the length of wires, or put smaller XLR plugs at the end?  I'm looking into connecting up to a Marantz PMD661.  Also, will the -18dB setting on the PMD661 handle the signal from the mics?  I find I have to attenuate more to avoid overload on this deck - AKG451's and HEB's.

Thanks,
Bill

The 4021s are great and very easy to stealth.

DPA can shorten/lengthen the cables for you. Their price is pretty good, and it's worry free.  I think I paid $30 to have them do mine.

B&H will not bargain, and if DPA is like most high-end manufacturers they won't let people list a lower price.  However, I would try Justin at Pro Sound (justin@pro-sound.com I believe) who can sometimes discuss discounts privately with TS.com members.

They should work fine with the 661.

You could buy used, though since they are discontinued the used sets now are getting older and older.  Also, that side exit cable is prone to breaking down over time. If I were you, and I could, I'd buy new from DPA and get mics with a warranty that you know  have not been abused.

That said, post an ISO in the YS. It can't hurt.

don't diy a cable job on dpa's.

dpa will do it and you know it's right/you're covered.

fyi, all the electronics are in the xlr connector.
