advice/questions on difference of microphones
« on: March 09, 2008, 03:04:24 AM »
hi, i have a jb3 and read the faq, realized that i need a batterybox w/bass roll off (ill be taping loud concerts) and i would like to get some stealthy mics.
i was wondering, what is the difference between some mics like this:
Core Sound Low Cost Binaural Microphones and Low Cost Stealthy Cardioid Microphones™ http://www.core-sound.com/lcmics/1.php
and these http://www.giant-squid-audio-lab.com/gs/gs-cardioidstereo.html ?
the price different is only 10-15, but is one better than the other?
I can't spend more than $200 so would it be a good option to go with one of these (or something else in within price range )a sound professionals battery box w bass rolloff?
thanks

With your budget, I'd get the Church Audio ST-11's or his new cardoid mics. They can handle high SPL's and won't distort.

New mics for $170:

Busman Audio BSC1-K1/K2/K3/K4 > HiHo Silver XLR's > Deck TBD

CA-14 (c,o)/MM-HLSC-1 (4.7k mod)/AT853(4.7k mod)(c,o,h,sc)/CAFS (o)/CA-1 (o) > CA-9100 (V. 4.1)/CA-9200/CA-UBB > Sony PCM-D50/Sony PCM-M10

From owning a pair of the giant squid audio mics, i wouldn't buy them again. Yes, they are cheap and you can get them now but I haven't been impressed with them. When I first got my minidisc and didn't know what I wanted to record, they were fine but now that I know what I want to record (really loud things like music) these would not work well and wouldn't be worth your money. Save it and buy something else. What should you buy? Well, I don't know I am not the expert but read what people will write you and more importantly, go to archive.org and check out some of the mics. Most of the people here will tell you Church, church, church or audio technica style from soundpro.com.

right now I am liking the CA-14s and his 9100 pre-amp. Of course, this is way over your budget but keep looking around.

btw, how much do you like your jb3? I'm getting one pretty soon.
