AKG 480 setup patterns
« on: July 03, 2006, 05:11:24 AM »
Hey all... Just thought I would see what others opinions are out there.

Most I've heard from out here has said to setup the 480s with 61, 63 caps in a DinA config.  Seems like that is what everyone is doing.  I tried it a few times with great results but then switched over to NOS for my last few recordings.  I've got to say I'm really happy with the result.  In most venues NOS turns out really well and seems to have better seperationl.  Just thought I would ask for your .02.

Stay Kind,
Dana

That close, ORTF would have been tits! I run ORTF when close and DIN when far back. DINa when running hypers.

Can someone remind me what DINa is again? 90deg, 17cm? Something like that?

You are correct sir!

DINa is 17cm, 90 degrees.
DIN is 20cm, 90 degrees

So can someone educate me on how to tell if I have too much "separation", too little or just right. I taped three shows with AKG483s > MiniMe and the second night the sound was not as good (vocals and instruments sound too centered?) and I had pointed more to the left stack and eyed the mic config rather than measured. Is this characteristic of lack of separation?

Thanks in advance.

Yep... XY does not work for me either... Sounds like everyone (including me has been doing the ORTF or DIN) and has pretty much been doing what I have.  Anyone try NOS?

Here is a sample... Was directly FOB in the tapers section.  Probably about 40' back from stage in a small outdoor amp.

if i am centeres i run my 63's 90 deg dont know what the spacing is.

if I am off center severely i cross the caps.  i dont really sweat the specs or distance or exact 90 degrees.  as long as my mics are pointing toward the music I am happy.

As a general rule for spacing make the hawaiin 'hang loose' symbol.  Thumb and pinky sticking out all others in.  With my hands the distance from tip of the thumb to the tip of the pinky is almost exactly 17cm (dina).  Measure your hand and adjust accordingly.

EDIT: A shure a27 vert bar make it very easy to get angles dead on.

i run NOS with my 61s fairly often and have great results, NOS and DIN almost exclusively, I try to keep the caps closer when I run the hypers. if i'm onstage or really close I'll run ORTF - i am officially done with XY, just sounds too hollow (for lack of a bettter word)

on-stage I will often use ORTF, but for everything else its usually NOS or DIN, and I too hate XY, the one time I ran it really close and was the only taper for a phenomenal show produced a weird sounding recording and I have not run it since

FWIW, I ran 20' split 482's this weekend at the Crowes.   ;D

Typically I like to run the 61's DIN or ORTF and the 63's almost never veer from DINa.

I thought i was the only one who did this...hahah.

i've run DIN DINa and XY. the venue that i tape in the most sounds best with XY.  i think i've only run DIN on state and have never tried ORTF but might have to check that out next time i get the opportunity.
