ADK TLs vs LSD2 vs Avantone CK40
« on: December 02, 2007, 04:22:07 AM »
So I really kicked ass at work this year :-X and got a bonus  ;D so I think some new/diff mics are in order.

Take the following into consideration when making recommendations//fluffing:

Open taping only

Can be combined with Peluso CEMC6(c,h,sc)

Would like ability to run M/S (for some reason I am really attracted to this, I record up close a lot, mostly rock/psych/pop/punk/jambands in small clubs, but some theatre, some festies maybe this year)

Will be used with Busman PMD670(he described the mod as like the ACM, haven't used it yet) or V3>MT

I like SD over LD purely for convenience sake, but I'd consider LD.

Budget - 600-800 def under a grand

my first thoughts are toward a dual capsule stereo mic but I just can't get past the overly bright sound I've heard from the ones available in my price range.

Any and all recommendations are welcome.

Thanks

cards are going to be your best bet, and eventually you can save up and get a fig8 cap...

i am not sure if there is a fig8 available for the peluso's... might have to bump that budget up a little bit, if you can spend about 1000 you can get a good setup...

I would reccomend MBHO's for your price range. If you don't have a need for an active setup, you could go with the 603 bodies and ka200n capsules - a much cheaper alternative to the 603a (active) setup. Same sound - great mics. although i dont believe that MBHO makes a figure 8 capsule. so adding MS capability in the future is not possible...

You can definitely pick up a set of 603's/ka200 for <1000

Microphones:
CCM4v (pair)
mk6 (pair) and mk41 (pair) with kc5's & cmc6's
mk21 (1) for those M/S situations

Preamps:
Sonosax SX-M2

Recorders:
Sound Devices 722
Edirol R-01

Actually, MBHO's do have eights for the 603/603a series.  In fact, Oleg has been trying to sell a perpetually 4 month old one at a near new price for the last 6 months.

One of the problems is that MBHO has no reasonable website where you can check their product lines...which has been discussed many times here in the past.

read Nick's Picks post about the pesulo's.  Apparently active cables and figure 8 caps are planned for the near future.

His post is somewhere in taperchat I believe

I've got an LSD2, and I don't find it *too* bright, but that is a matter of opinion of course.  Here are a couple of recent shows which I think have a nice balance of deep bass and crisp highs... I'm using a Oade W+ mod UA-5.

http://www.archive.org/details/hbr2007-11-29.lsd2.flac16f (track 11)  XY

I've got a few others not on the archive, with a straight Dmod UA-5, and with Mid/Side.  If you seriously start to consider the LSD2, I can get you those.

But, none of these shows are "rock/psych/pop/punk"... I'm not sure how that differs... I thinking that you would be taping more heavy bass, and lots of cymbal crashes...

I'd love to listen to your samples, but FWIW those images that you load in with your archives are taking so long to download that it's locking up my machine.  Not complaining, but just giving you some feedback.  Course, I _AM_ presently on probably the world's slowest freaking internet connection...best download speeds I can get here are like 25kbps.  OTOH, even at this speed I can listen to samples on the archive as long as it doesn't lock my machine up for some other reason.

one of my first impulses....

listened to some TL > Busman R4 samples this morning and I like. Having the multiple patterns is also very attractive for M/S,Blumlein.

and twatts has a MP on an aging thread over in the YS :hmmm:

I have a real sturdy stand but having one of these upside down for M/S or two clamped on for Blumlein kinda scares me. Looks like the mounts screw on the bottom so prob not that big a deal.

my first vote (based on price) would be the mbho's, although the fig 8 cap would have to be a second purchase (b/c i think it is around 600-800 alone).

but the LSD2 would be another nice choice.  can do M/S and Blum plus the standard xy (and maybe healy omni).  its a LD, but since it is just one mic, it shouldnt be like lugging around a pair of the LDs.

i wish i had a bonus  :'(

Hmm... not sure if I'd hold out on the Peluso actives or Fo8 cap, as they're still in development and have been for a long time. The TLs might be cool, as you'd have SD and LD mics to play with.

I think we'll see that 3 pattern cap in early 08.
:)
i hope, any way.

my vote goes for the LSD2.  best bang for the buck.  $540 new from fullcompass.
maybe avantones ?  modded ?
maybe an avantone stereo mic ?  be a guinea pig for the team.

Are you sure that price is still available?  (And if so, how do you get it?)  I see it listed at $660 there: http://www.fullcompass.com/product/255500.html

That said the LSD2 is pretty nice even at that price point, I don't find it very bright but I seem to have a taste for bright mics.

it can be bright...
but it can also be mind blowingly good.

FCs printed prices are never the same as what you get when you call and/or have an account.

So I think it's gonna be one of these 3.

ADK TLs = proven performance, lots of patterns/options and they are heavy as all get out. But I can use one figo8 and a Peluso subcard for the M if I get the fancy.

LSD2 = proven performance and easy set up. From the few recordings I've heard it kinda brings out the sibilance(?is that the right word) in the vocals and splashiness(I know that's the right word) in the cymbals.

Avantone CK40 = takin one for the team...just might be up for it.
edit: until I saw that little splitter box WTF

Thanks for your insights....
