Title: Vienna Acoustics Sepakers?
Post by: phanophish on May 06, 2013, 01:53:06 PM
Anyone know much about them?  Local HiFi place has a used pair that I think sound pretty great.  I'd be moving from a pair of Magnepan MMGs.  Supposedly retail was around $4k new.  Used is about $1k with a pair of small stands.  5 drivers total per tower.  2 low, 2 mids and a tweeter.

Always very highly regarded, and it sounds like a good price. However, they will sound very different from the MMGs.

Do you like the Maggie sound? If so, why move to a more traditional dynamic driver type speaker?

I love the Maggies.  Mainly I'm looking to downsize a bit.  If I had one complaint about the Magnepans acoustically it would be the sweet spot is pretty location dependent.  If I am on the couch they sound amazing, but standing or off center in the room and they loose the high end a bit.  But the main reason for the upgrade is to get something a little smaller and eliminate the need for a Sub.

I compared 4-5 different speakers at the dealer; Martin Logan Theos, KEF LS50, B&W 684s, & the Viennas.  Liked them the best, particularly for the $$.

If you want a similar sound to the Maggie's in a smaller size try the eminent technology lft 16:

So I went back in and gave the Viennas another listen.  Suffice it to say the Maggies are not going anywhere.  They just did not have anything on the low end.  Maybe they dealer had something misconfigured but I was totally left scratching my head wondering how I thought the sounded so good one time and so lacking the next.  Went back home and played the same source material on my MMGs and they blew the Viennas away.  If anyone is looking for the best deal in HiFi check out the Magnepan MMGs.
