Title: SBM1 and JB3
Post by: gdplusmore on April 10, 2005, 08:37:36 PM
Please advise what cables are needed to make this work.  I believe the SBM1 is standard without any mods.

Thanks

Another option is a DIY 7-pin toslink cable.  There's directions on here and on oade's, or Fozzy will probably make you one if you ask nicely.  Here's Fozzy's and a right angle toslink -> mini cable from SP.

Her's the whole setup, including my DIY voltage regulator so I could run the jb3 off of a walmart battery.  I also have a 9v output, which basically bypasses the voltage regulator circuit to power a PS2.  Thanks to leegedy for all the help on this project.
I'm still carrying lead though, as it powers both the sbm-1 and D8, which I use to monitor levels, and possibly make a backup of.

I've got a fozzy cable - it's awesome.  Also, someone just posted the cable you need in the Ebay section!  Its a pricey cable though... and some people report that it isn't very heavy duty... Others report that it hasn't been a problem.

i believe the cablecurrently in the ebay section doesn't terminate in mini-toslink.  it's the regular 7pin > toslink cable that truly has been out of production for quite some time.

i used to own one of those, and 7-pin > toslink > mini-toslink adapter > jb3 didn't work.

now i own a 7pin > mini-toslink cable, and jb3 recording sessions are flawless.

i have the sony cable.  don't know the number but it is 7 pin w/ a toslink in and out.  i use a right angle mini connector with it and it has been flawless.   ran about 30 shows or so with it and no problems.  i've still been running the d100 too, but I'm getting ready to drop it.

The cable, however is very flimsy.  Probably about as thick around as #2 pencil lead.   I've been pretty careful with it but am worried about it long term :)

FWIW I'm ready to drop the D8 for monitoring now. After some testing, I found that anytime I leave or turn on the background light on the D8 within any distance of the SBM-1 it causes an annoying hum to be produced and passed on in the SBM-1 to the JB3.  I'm pretty sure it never passed it to the D8, so I'm a little frustrated.  For an example of what I'm talking about go here and download a flac sample of a show I did Friday (http://www.dgodwin.com/bt/efo2005-04-15sample.flac)

i used to do the d8 for levels thing, but i have come to know and rely on the sbm1 for my jb3 metering.
