Title: What is the BEST microphones for the following conditions
Post by: JoeRay on October 06, 2003, 12:45:38 AM
Howdy Friends,
Greetings from the Kenai River, Alaska...
I have been taping concerts for the past35 years.  Jimi Hendrix in Cleveland 3-26-68 was my first show.. (over 500 since).
I need you folks to recommend the BEST miscophones (money no objest)  8) 8) :fish:for the following taping situation:
Must be stealth, for a new 24/96 recorder from Core Sound or Sony M-1 DAT, mostly folk-rock, from intimate theatres to arenas in the first 10 rows.
I will value your opinions.  Peace,  joe Ray

how stealth?

DPA 4022 would be my vote, but you'd need a preamp/phantom box to power them.  Some of the other stealth masters might carry a little more weight.

+T and welcome!

neumann skm140s would be nice, unless you need something ultra stealthy and don't want to mess around w/ having mic bodies.  if you need something ultra stealthy i'd look into the schoeps ccm series or a schoeps mk(x) > nbox setup.  personally i'd take the neumanns or the schoeps over the dpas any day of the week.

the stealth master, funny enough, doesn't know jack about stealthing

but, for my $00.02
depending on how stealth you want to go,  there are many options
akg 390
dpa 402X
schoeps mk(x)
Audix 1290s

many many options, most of these will need some type of phantom power.

some decent stealth boxs (preamps, adc, and p/s), some providing power, some not
SD MP-2 &Mixpre
PSP-2 and -3
Sonosax box
Deneke AD-20
Sony modSBM-1

these may or may not be stealthable.  Depends on how much you can put down your crotch ;)

just from listening to tapes i'd say schoeps mk(x) it also depends on if you like transperant VS colored ... and if $$ is not a problem, why not get one of those nifty SD all in one boxes http://www.sonicsense.com/744t.htm it would even cover 48v phantom power.

Uhmmmm...because they're not available yet and likely won't be until Q1 2004 at the earliest?

right, right... i think it's funny how lots of folks are already caressing SD's HD recorders' balls when the things haven't even seen action yet...

You could go dpa 4022/21/schoeps ccmXX->v3 without too much of a problem I wouldn't think.  I have stealthed the mme once, along with full size mics without problems.  The sax may be your best sounding smaller bet though.

No mention of MBHO  ???

Top Tier Stealth Mics, in my opinion:
DPA 4022
Neumann with LC-3 Cables
Scheops with KCY cables
MBHO with actives

To my ears the best stealth mic/combos are:
DPA 4002 > Sound Devices MP2
Neumann > Sonosax SX-M2 or Sound Devices MP2
Scheops > Sonosax SX-M2
MBHO > Sound Devices MP2

Even if the SD recorder will not be available until 1Q. I would still wait.... If I had the money I would get .... DPA 4022 > Sound Devices 744t
