Altec A7s Voice of the Theatre... I have a chance to buy a pair for 450... I ve  wanted a pair since high school...  I have a 20w tube amp.


Am I nuts?     Its even hard to say "Sound Reinforcement" with a straight face.

Nope, I think your nuts to not at least try them. Your talking classic horns with tubes.
I know you like, tape for people's approval and stuff, and wave your tapes around like they're your dick...  but even you can't actually think section tapes from philips sound good.

I have a pair of Altec "Lagunas"

Despite the current trend for small cube speakers with subwoofers or even worse, idocks........

I say bigger is better!

I got a pair of Tannoy Winchesters that are size of a small refrigerators and have 15" coaxial drivers.....no sub needed :o

Just got back a few days ago from a trip to the NC mountains and made a 3 day side trip to Nashville to catch a show and check out the music scene.  Did the tour of historic RCA studio 'B' which is a bit unique in having most of the original equipment intact and in working order including the piano, vibes, marimba, amps, and all the analog control room gear.  The guide played out takes and session banter from an old Elvis session over a pair of JBL monitors setup on either side of the original giant Altec's under the control room window.  I told him it was really great to hear that room, but I'd love hear the clip played back thru the old Altec's.  He smiled and said, "Me too."
