Topic: my budget for a rig is $3500

I've decided to go with KM 184>V3(have P1/D8)

I've been patching since '99, time to step up. As much as I'd like to spend the $5000 to get the 4v's>v3, I just can't justify the kind of money right now, trying to save for a home.

I think for the money ($1400) the 184's are the way to go. I would love some feedback as far as cables,clamps,stand/stealthabilty. Which vendor to buy from.

get a set of canare/neutrik custom made cables with whatever ends you need be it straight xlr or right angle xlr, you could make them yourself or someone here would make you some

bogen/manfrotto seems to be a common used stand available at good prices at b&hphoto.com for stealth purposes they have some great small stands that go about 7' high

with a $3500 dollar budget you can definately get a great sounding setup, especially if you're patient and buy your gear used.  though you don't see a ton of v3s for sale the going rate seems to be around $1250 and for the km184s i've seen them sold for as low as $700 on this board.  in the $1400 range i'd look into a set of neumann skm140s if you like the neumann sound since they're more versatile than the 184s.  

also with a $3500 budget i don't think the mk4v > v3 rig is out of your reach, might want to check out this sale: http://www.taperssection.com/yabbse/index.php?board=7;action=display;threadid=11103;start=msg134382#msg134382  i think if you sold off the sbm-1 you'd have just enough to get the v3 with the remainder of you budget.

buying well taken care of used gear is the only way to go imho.

ok 3500 - 1400 (lets say you go new) leaves you 2100 for mics.  Why not get a used pair of 140s with actives (about 1500) and that leaves you 600 for whatever you want.  Cables wont be that much nor will a stand.  Go buy drugs with the extra money so you can be extra heady :-)

Nick hit it spot on, IMO - consider the SKM140s instead of the 184s, and with your budget the 4v > V3 is not out of reach if you buy used gear.  Almost all of my gear is used - I think the only piece of gear I bought new is my D100 and I've had more problems with it than my used D8!

Used gear has been a little slow lately, I think - more gear will start coming up for sale in the next couple months as people pay of holiday bills, prepare for paying off taxes, or receive tax refunds and sell old gear to help fund new purchases.

I haven't seen a whole lot of used gear for sale on ebay. I saw a rig with the 4v's with the battery powered bodies, not sure I wanna go that route. If I was patient enough to wait I may be able to find most of the rig used but I would rather not wait 3 months. That being said, what should I expect to spend on new/used 140's?

In addition to EBay, keep an eye out here, Oade Bros, and DAT-Heads.  I know there are other forums, maybe a couple Yahoo groups as well, but am less familiar with them.  $1300-1500 seems to be the going prices for used SKM140 kit incl. actives.  New, no idea.  I love the sound outta 140s > V3, in some respects more than my CMC64 > V3.

Great thing about used gear - if you get stuff now and find a deal on something else later, you can generally sell it for what you paid, or damn near it.

i'd say go neumans..   i think they sound better than schoeps IMO.  but its all what you want and like in your sound.  not saying shoeps sound bad, they are increadible, but i'd rather use them in a studio, vs field.  good luck, i hope you get going.

i paid $1450 shipped for my skm140s, i've seen a couple sets go lower and some other ones go a bit higher so $1400 - $1550 seems like a good ball park.  if it were me i'd atleast post an iso on a couple of the message boards before i even considered buying new.  not only will you save money in the begining by buying used but you won't lose very much on your original investment when you go to sell the gear (you'll probably lose atleast 20% when selling gear you bought new).

or you could go 480's >v3 and have some cash left over taboot..you could even fork over the extra cash on all 3 sets of capsules.....i wouldve said 140's/150's, but i really dont like the 150's at all.....

what kind of shows will you be taping??? small clubs???

if you were sticking w/ the 140's and no hypers, id say go w/ the 140's>v3, and the stealthyness is great, but if youre getting multiple caps, not much stealthing, go w/ team akg!!

Those are good reasons to pay my taxes, but not reasons to provide interest-free loans to the feds (though I suppose in aggregate it may help them out a bit).  Besides, I'm of the mind that they oughta be able to provide all those things effectively and efficiently based on the taxes I pay, not on the interest-free loan I may or may not provide.

I plan on taping club shows, theatrer, and at some outdoor sheds/festivals. I prefer to run up front, no section for me(if I can help it) and really like a low end presence on my tapes. I was wondering if running a AD500e behind the V3 would provide any benefits??

I made a bid on the 140>MP2>MME, we'll see if it's enough.

i've always been happy with the 140 > mme combination for open taping and 140 > mp2 for stealth taping but never found any benefit to running the mp2 in front of the mme.

FWIW: I also dig the 140>V3 combo. I run 4022>V3  but have made a couple nice 140>V3 tapes, one was SKB 3-28-03, my V3 with Hippies (Scott M) 140's ORTF on stage, I think this one came out REAL nice. I think it is up on archive.org. Also ran 140>V3 for Bonnaroo, pulled some good ones there.
Just to nitpick, to me the Neumann cardioids sound a little loose/underdamped in the very low end when recording a PA system from a distance, but other than that I think they are great.

take your time and buy used gear youll get more for your money the skm1&&>V3 combo is a great setup...do you have a homedat deck or a soundcard that support spdif?  there are a lot of options with that amount of money for a really nice setup
