New computer or new mics?
« on: July 04, 2005, 11:58:22 AM »
Ok guys, my birthday is coming up and my mom recently came into some money! ;D

I think she will be willing to spend a decent amount this time because she has some extra dough and untill I started taping I almost never had anything that I really wanted from her for bdays in the past few of years.  So, she has mentioned that she really wants to get me something kick ass.

I'm gonna be honest with her and just ask how much she would be willing to spend, but I am thinking in the $1500 range.  Plus I could convince her to go that high because she is so generous and she loves to see me so passionate about music(and she loves the hell out of my tapes I give her).

So here is my dillema, all be it a great one to have. ;D  My computer sux balls for processing my recordings.  It takes like 15 minutes to load up a 2hr show into Sound Forge or CDwave and a hell of a lot longer to run processes like normalization or saving a huge file like that.  One great example of my computer suckieness is that it only takes maybe 5-10mins to transfer a long show from my jb3 to my computer, but then it takes the computer another 20minutes to transfer it from a temp location to the actual folder.  However, I get by with it and I usually am doing this while watching tv or listening to music anyway, so no biggy.  If I did get a new computer I would use it strictly for musical purposes.

Or...

I could get some better mics and have better sounding recordings and a real slow computer.

What is YOUR opinion?  Mics or Computer?

If you think I should go with the mics, then give me some suggestions/opinions for the $1000-1500 price range.

Thanks,
Joe

Both!

You can get a decent enough PC w/a good soundcard (like an Audiophile 2496) for $500 or so. That's another grand for mics, which puts you in the AKG 480/Neumann KM184/MBHO range.

Right now nothing...in the past: Schoeps CMC6, AKG 480, AKG 460, AKG 414, MBHO 603a, Neumann KM100, ADK TL>Schoeps MK4, Schoeps MK2, Schoeps MK41, AKG ck61, AKG ck62, AKG ck63, Neumann AK40, Neumann AK50, MBHO ka200>Lunatec V2, Lunatec V3, Apogee Mini-Me, Oade M148, Oade M248, Sound Devices MP2, Sonosax SXM2>Sony (mod)SBM1, Apogee AD500>D7, D8, D100, M1, R1, R4, R09, iRiver HP120, Microtrack

laptop, for that kind of maney you could get a nice one.
Then you could use it to record and process your recordings. you already have the UA-5 so why not exploit your rig fully before you upgrade it.

If your going to get mics you should start listening to recordings of the possibilities already mentioned. Try to find recordings with the digimod UA-5>JB3 in it, so you have a good idea of the sound you would be getting. Just my .02$

Go for mics.

A computer that is used only for transferring concerts can be had for dirt cheap these days.  My DAW (digital audio workstation) is only a 1GB processor and works great, no real need to upgrade it.
AKG C4000 > P-mod UA-5 > NJB3 (48KHz) > SVU-2
DPA 4061 (x1, hat mounted) > MPS 6010 > P-mod UA-5 >  NJB3 (48KHz)

Looking for another 4061 or even a pair of 406x mics to replace my single.  Please help me stealth in stereo.

Or you could take the $1500, sell $1000 worth of blood/semen/plasma and join Team Schoeps...

I agree the TL's are a great option and you would have a set of sd and ld mics. Not a bad combo to have. You could also pick up a nice laptop with the change. Good spot Bean +T. :clapping:

Oh yeah that comment about not wanting to upgrade from schoeps, dont pay any attention to it Nick is just another puppet of the darkside :P :D
