was offered a nomad jbc for my sony md. should i take it?
« on: October 27, 2005, 11:58:31 PM »
i am so sick of md and all its crap.  recently my friend offered me a nomad jbc for my sony mz-510.  would this be a good trade deal?  i mean i know i will be upgrading in some aspects, but what about in others?  does the jbc have record level meters?  i have a sound professionals batterbox with bass rolloff and dual level control.  and i have stereo cardioid mics from sound professionals as well.  the md worked well, but now it is just a hastle as i have to watch for the length of the show and it started acting up when i was at billy corgan so i didnt get it taped.  can anyone give me insight as to weather this trade would be worth it or if i am better to keep the crappy md.

thanks

Also do it if it's a Chevy.

Trade provisionally for a week.  If you like it, make the trade permanent.  If you don't, swap back.

well if it is like the jb1, then no... optical is nice, but not essential... it is all the outer features of the jb3 that really allow it to be used as a live music recording device (i.e., track lenghts & limits, wav, etc)

i think the md in this case is a better choice... and damn i almost feel high saying that....  :-[

the jb1 can record to wave.  i dont know where people get off saying that it cant.  also what is it with track length that people are complaining about?  does it just split it every 15 minutes?  if so that isnt really too bad because md splits it every 5.  if it records to wave, what is the problem with them?  please let me know

edit: here is a link saying that it can record to wave

i dont know where people get off saying that it cant.

Perhaps they found the info on the HD recorder function summary table I compiled.  At the time, I found no specs from Creative indicating the JB or JBC could record to WAV.  I see the Creative manual updated on 4/25/05 indicates the JB3 will record WAV via analog-in, but only to very small WAV files (~15min or so).  I still do not see any documentation that the JBC records to WAV.  I've updated the HD recorder function summary table accordingly.

also what is it with track length that people are complaining about?  does it just split it every 15 minutes?  if so that isnt really too bad because md splits it every 5.  if it records to wave, what is the problem with them?

The WAV split may or may not be a problem.  The question:  does it split files seamlessly and allow for seamless compilation?  For example, may one re-compile four 15-min WAV files into a single 60-min WAV file without introducing artifacts or dropouts?  I don't know the answer since I've never tried it.  The problem for some tapers:  many of us want a recorder with a digital input.

I stand by my recommendation:

Trade provisionally for a week.  If you like it, make the trade permanent.  If you don't, swap back.

I've never heard of a md recorder splitting tracks every 5 mins, that has to be a menu option.

Like Smokey Robinson, I second that emotion.  My dinosaur Sharp MD has an option for auto track splits in a variety of intervals.  Sometimes it accidentally gets turned on, I suspect that happened here.

I could be wrong, but if the file was indeed split at the marks... on upload you'd see several files instead of one large one.

With Hi-MD that is indeed the case (true file splits), but I don't know about MD.
