Big difference between Modded WM61caps and ECM-MS907?
« on: January 19, 2006, 07:43:58 AM »
Hi there.

Yesterday I was explaining to a friend why should he upgrade his mics.

He records with an ECM-MS907, and he does not want to expend money in new mics, so I told him I could build a pair of capsules WM61-A linkwitz modded and a Battery box with designed bass rolloff for the Sony MD he uses to record.

The fact is that I found that, except for those who prefer cards or omnis, the freq response of the ECM goes from 100Hz to 15Khz. I found it quite poor. WM61 goes from 20Kz. to 20KHz. The ECM mic only handles up to 110 dbSPL (because it runs under a single AA battery), but I can't remember how much SPL could a WM61A modded handle (maybe 125 dbSPL?)

And well, I would like to hear your opinions about pros and cons concerning these TWO mics (WM61A modded and ECM-MS907).

Thanks!

ECM is directional the WM61s are not.  You might be able to sell him on the idea that it will sound better since the recording is binaural and he can better hide the mics.  But if he doesn't want to spend the money to try something new, you might be beating a dead horse here.  Lend him some of your gear if you really want to sell him on the idea.  I like the WM61 caps.  You can get a good tape from them if you are in the sweet spot.  Moding them allows for a better SPL handling.  His tapes will improve with them only if he makes an effort to get in the right spot...otherwise it may be worse.

FYI, my first pair of mics in the digital recording era were CSB>Batt Box (WM61).  5 years later, I am running Schoeps (after going thru, Neumann, AKG and Nakamichi).  Your friend probably understands all too well what going to a new mic means....
