Ok, so the optical-in on my Jb3 crapped out again on me (2nd time). I'm considering trying one more repair and then possibly moving on to something more rugged and reliable.  The thing is, I'm a mostly "stealth" taper.  Not really stealthy as in I have to go through a security check, but stealthy enough that I don't want a load of cables and SLA batteries adn whatnot.

Ive been happy with the JB3, but was thinking that maybe it'd be a good idea to go simply AT853rx>???(recorder). It would have to provide phantom power and good quality A/D though. I was thinking about the new Tascam R2 units, which are sort of in my price range, but can't really make up my mind if that's too big or not.  I like the idea of just having mics and a recorder. I see them going for 750 used, which if I sell my UA-5, AD-20 and PS-2 becomes a do-able investment.

Thoughts?

How about an Oade ACM-Mod PMD 660? I think its stealthable and would work with the AT853s, it would probably sound great taboot.

but aren't they significantly more expensive than the Tascam? like 1300 with the mods or something? Maybe I'm confusing them with the 671...

The 660 will limit you to 16/48 AFAIK it's around $750 with the ACM mod.

I've looked at the 660 a bit now.  Looks promising.  I don't think I really need 24bit, especially with a pair of $300 mics. 

Has anyone tried the BCM, or is the ACM the agreed upon "only good choice"?

THe only trouble is that I'm in Canada and Oade doesn't deliver here, so I'm limited to the yardsale.

I wouldn't limit yourself I'm sure there is someone that will help you out with that, i.e. you buy the gear and have it shipped to a board member they in turn ship it to you, I could probably help you with it.  :)

+T for the offer!  I guess step 1 is to see what the damage is on the damn Jb3.  Of course this has to happen the week before 2 radiohead shows, 1 slip show and the start of one of the best jazz festivals of the year.   >:(

Ill also chime in as Ive done on other similar threads with praise for the ACM PMD660.

Ive only had it a few weeks now, but it has worked great for me and I do almost all 'under the radar' taping.

Its not TINY, but it sure was a nice switch from PS-2>linexformers>SBM1>DAT to just one box

The only way to find out is by email, I've read they've been pretty backed up these days, a few months I think...

Damn! I guess I'll have to get the JB3 up and running for sure then.  Thanks all!  Will try Oade this week. In the meantime, if anyone's got an extra ACM 660 kicking around....  ;D

from my experience their order > turnaround time hovers around four, maybe five weeks, during this time of the year. 
doug is the only one who performs the mods and his time on the bench is limited b/c of his back problems.
