Well I took the plunge and bought a 722 in the yard sale (Thanks Ice)
I've just ordered some DPA 6041s and was just fishing for any tip you guys might have on this set up and 722s in general.
settings, stelthing (by PM if you like) or anything else I should know about this beauty before I head out.

If you are running using the 722 without a pre in front of it resist the any leftover 16 bit urges to run hot.   For a typical amplifiled rock show I try to set my gains so that I am in the orange meters regularly but hit the first red -12dbFS only every once in a while.  If I see it hitting the first red frequently I'll back out of it a little.  Seems to be the sweet spot for the 722 pres.

Also a little gotcha when you are getting familiar with the deck - there are a lot of options, and it will remember the *latest* settings you've entered, it does not automatically load your saved settings.  So until you get really familiar with what all the indicators mean, or especially if you are not able to pay a lot of attention to the readouts once you get to the show, make sure you stage your equipment before you go out, or else load saved presets once you get to the show.   First three times out with the 722 aI had no technical problems at all.  Fourth time out I screwed up because I was not as familiar with it as I thought and did not make sure my setup was right, and was not in a position to notice at the show.  Live and learn - hopefully you will not have to make the same mistake...

You will not regret your expensive plunge. Yes, record in 24/96. If you don't have 24/96 playback capabilities...get them. I'm sure you can find threads here that will point you to a reasonably priced 24/96 set up. I picked up a used cheap Denon with dvd-a and dvd-v audio playback. It's a temporary solution for me at this time, but it works fine for now.   

As for the 722 in the field, I was thrilled with the ease of running it. Not much of a learning curve necessary. Your result will speak for itself. Congrats on the purchase! And while I do own a few pre's, do not be afraid to run the 722 solo with your mics. The internal pre is very underated IMO. The shows I ran MK4/CMC6>722 sound fantastic to my ears. I have no doubt that DPA's>722 are quite sweet as well.

You probably want to check out the Team SD 7xx threads. I sat down with mine and went through every menu several times.  But there are some things that are a little tricky, until you get used to them, like the mic/line switch on the XLRs.  Make sure you check to see that they are in the right place.  It's a great machine, and definitely run at 24/96, if not for your listening today, then for tomorrow.  And as mentioned above, if not running an external pre, you do not want to clip.  In those cases, I let peaks hit -6db max.

I agree, i think the sweet spot for the 7x series are peaking at -12db or one light past it MAX I usually add about +5db gain for my tracked/uploaded 16/24-bit sources!

stealth mode in the menu will turn off the meters and all other lights when you turn off the backlight - crucial for stealth applications.

i have always run mine in low gain mode, even for some quieter acoustic stuff, but you may need to do otherwise depending on your mics

as long as you don't clip i think you should be fine, even a slight over IME won't be too audible with more recent firmware. it does seem though that the machine has odd behavior when maxed on gain either + or -

Just a quick thanks to everyone who's replied.
I've not got the DPA 4061s through in the post yet so I've not had a chance to get stuck in to it yet but I'll be back with some questions soon.
For now though...Should the inputs be set to mic in or line in?
I'm use to going line in on every other recorder

it will depend on how much gain you want to add - if you ever run mics that require phantom you can change the settings to have phantom for any of the below options

Normal Mic In = 25 to 70db
Low Mic In = 10 to 55db
Line In = -6 to 18db

Once I am set up, and it is even close, I just start rolling.  Eight seconds may help if it is just a momentary lapse, but otherwise, I would rather just cut out the dead space in post.
