Who here runs Aerco MP2>Korg MR1?
« on: July 03, 2009, 03:08:31 AM »
Recently I broke my Korg out of retirement and have had some issues.  I will blame the combo of MP2>MR1.

I used to run my Schoeps VMS02IB and/or Nbox>MR1 with no issues, running the MR1 at around -5db to -7db

Now I own the MP2, which has run flawlessly into my SD units and Edirol R-09HR with MP2 switched to 20db gain

The 1st of 3 times I used the MP2/MR1 combo I had some clipping that I attributed to my hot levels MP2 at 20db gain, MR1 at -8.5(peaked at +4.7), the 2nd time I ran ultra conservative, dropping MP2 gain to +10 and running the MR1 at -10...worked flawlessly, other than the levels only peaking at around -8.2.

tonight I tried +20db on MP2 and -11db on the MR1......levels peak at +0.06 with some very mild clipping that I can live with.

I am guessing that the Korg just can't take the output of the MP2 at 20db gain? since I didnt go "Over" on the Korg tonight.

So I guess my point in posting is...IS this what everyone else has surmised? Should I just set the MP2 at +10db and leave the rest to the MR1?

I once ran Peluso > Aerco > Korg MR-1. My Aerco levels were either at 0 or 10dB, and the Korg was set to 0. This was not a loud show (Wilco), so I think the Korg can't take that hot of an output.

its not overly sensitive.
I think if you drop the gain down to +10db you'll be A-OK.
besides, the less gain, the better.

I sat down and figured this out once, with reference to my V3 > MR-1 anyway.  Per the published specs the MR-1 can take a maximum input voltage of +6dbV, that's at the input stage before any +/- gain.  I may not be explaining it well, but basically it comes down to this:  if the input signal is hot enough that you need to set the Korg gain any lower than -6 to avoid clipping you are probably ripe for distortion, and my experience seems to agree with this.  Watching the meters might make you think everything is going OK, but you are brickwalling inside the deck.

Yes, the SD7xx and the R09s can take a hotter signal than the MR1.

I think in your case the answer is "set the MP2 at +10db".

Don't ever set the Korg MR-1 below -10. According to guysonic, if the Korg needs to be set below -10 to keep the meters from hitting 0 dB, your recording may well be distorted anyway.

Probably a small point since you only had the Korg set to -11 dB, but it may have contributed to the small amount of distortion you noted.

I typically run my MR-1 -12 db and I have never experienced any audible distortions in my recordings.

Alot of people have made attenuator cables for the MR-1 so this may be an option.

I have an MR1 (and an MR1000) and neither can take a hot signal.  I use -20db attenuation pretty much any time I put an external pre signal through my MR1.  There have been several threads about this - in one I tried (almost successfully) to calculate the max input level on the MR1.  It ended up being a pretty low thrshold before the internal analog pre overloads/brickwalls
AKG 461's / 463's OR Senn MKH 8040's > MR1000 (Busman mod) or Shure FP24 (aka MixPre) > MR1 (open)
Coresounds Binaurals > CChurch 9100 > MR1 OR AKG CK1x/2x/3x > Deneke P20 > MR1 (low profile)
