as already stated by others you can record on the lawn and get good results.  however, whether to record on the lawn (or not) is a venue-specific decision based on physical design (natural acoustics) and speaker set-up (i.e. repeaters).  as a general rule of thumb, i try to avoid the lawn unless i'm familiar with the venue (or am really lazy).  it's definitely more work to record FOB, but the results are well worth it.

while not an "apples to apples" comparison by any means, here are two recent recordings from the Berkeley Greek (one FOB, the other is from the OTS just in front of lawn).  both recording rigs were centered in relation to the stage, but the FOB recording is about 100+ feet in front of the OTS recording.  while the OTS recording is good, the FOB recording is much more crisp and detailed.
