If you are playing back directly from HDD so PC-> soundcard -> analog -> amp. Is Jitter introduced HDD -> soundcard or is it not intorduced at all ?

I am using a VX pocket 440 -> XLR to RCA -> Amp.

I seriously doubt you would notice any. Yes some could be introduced I believe
going XLR>RCA or is that RCA a SPDIF? If it is then I doubt very much would be
introduced. Especially on a short run.
Again though I doubt you would notice it. On a very hi-end system
it may be noticeable if any is there. I could be wrong... Please correct me.

I guess i was more interested where jitter might be introduced if at all in a setup where you are playing off a solid state medium vs. optical disc like DVD or CD.

To answer your other question the setup is Wavelab 5 -> VX Pocket -> 6ft Canare XLR to RCA (analog) -> AMP -> Speakers.


I was trying to understand where a clocking issue if any may occur in this type of setup.

there is always a little jitter someplace.

my understanding of jitter -- digital music is a series of "snapshots" of the sound that was digitized (the audio equivalent of a reel of film).  Jitter occurrs when either the speed at which each "snapshot" is decoded (the interval between each snapshot being decoded) or the order of the snapshots themselves is affected.  This could occur due to hardware issues (a hard drive or cd not feeding the data at the proper rate/uniformly) or due to software issues (the playback software not feeding the digital data to the d>a converter properly due to buffer issues, etc.).
