db question PMD670, M148, AKG460
« on: April 07, 2007, 05:01:15 PM »
this question will show my ignorance - i have no understanding of db:

Running 460>m148>pmd670

what db level am i at.

the M148 i believe is fixed at +10db, the 670 (-20 with the switch on)  which would bring me to -10 db.  does the level control on the 670 add 10 more db or just increments of db control.
then if i add the -10db switch on the 460's i would be recording at -20db again.

That is the first quesiton if at all coherent.???

the next, if this deduction is correct and i am recording at appx -10 or -20 db, where does the ACM performed by oade place my recording level?  what does this mean from their web page.

" XLR mic inputs have an input overload point high enough to accommodate +4 dB (XLR/TRS type) line level sources with plenty of headroom to spare."

i am trying to figure out what sort of mod would be good for what i record (jazz, swing in small but amplified venues and bluegrass)??

as always,
thanks
luke

Well the 148 is fixed +20 db gain and are you going line in or through the XLR's? I would highly recomend going line in for sure! All the other stuff I have no idea about :-\

if you run line in (ie. xlr from 148>rca to 670). you will get the 20db of gain from the 148 and bypass the pad on the 670. the dial acts as an attenuator.
mics: (4)akg c460b(a60,mk46,ck1x,ck1,ck2,ck3,ck61,ck63)
pres: oade m148/edirol wmod ua5
recorders: marantz stock671/oade acm671/fostex busman vintage fr2le
