Mic help
« on: August 22, 2011, 10:24:55 PM »
Looking for some input.
Just got myself a Tascam DR-2D.
Now that I have a new recorder, I am looking at upgrading my mics.
Currently, all I have is a Sony ECM-DS70P. No battery box, or pre.
I know, not great. Plenty of room for improvement there.

But here is the catch. I have a couple shows coming up in like 3 weeks.
So, right now, I only have a budget of $100 or less.
I should also mention this is strictly stealth.
The stuff I tape is loud rock / metal shows. Usually in outdoor venues (one of the upcoming is an amphitheater, the other is at a minor league ball field)
And I prefer omnis.
I like the sound of the whole experience, capturing the vibe of the show along with the music.

So, do I have much in the way of good options given my current budget and needs?
Or should I stick with what I have now, and wait until I have more money to spend?
Always looking for Iron Maiden and Papa Roach audio that I don't have.

Try looking in the Yard and see if you can find some used CAFS, CA-11's or CA-14's.  People often buy the pair of CA-14's and sell the omnis but they may be "too large" for 007 situations.  I don't find them that large (especially the "newer version" made in the last year or so.   The CAFS are tiny but you'll need to find some way of mounting them as they have no clips on them.  You'll also need a battery box.  Maybe shoot Chris Church an e-mail on here and see if he has any used gear kicking about (sometimes he does trade-ins allowing people to "bump up" their older, well taken care of, gear for newer stuff.

Your budget should be around $150 or so (including shipping) to get what you'll need.  I'd say the extra $50 will be worth it.

Don't know for sure if he's sold them, but acidjack has a set of Church CAFS in the Yard Sale > http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=147301.0
If you can't run stealth with mics this size, you shouldn't run stealth. ;D  I don't know if these require a battery box or if you can run them directly from your recorder off plug-in power.

Thanks for the input.
I'm gonna hold off until I have enough money to get something good.
