What's the pre for me?
« on: July 31, 2007, 10:52:37 AM »
Well, the Konnekt 8 has washed out as a field-worthy pre due to its utter inability to be field powered (at least, by me.)
So now I'm beginning my search for the right pre for me.

I currently run superlux mics and they're pretty much ok and won't be changing anytime too soon.
For a recorder, I run a nJB3 which has served me well. I think that I will, in time, switch to a flash-based recorder but I'd like to get back out taping before I can muster the cash for a PMD-671 or HD-P2 so I'm thinking about a reasonably priced pre...

Budget:
I can probably only muster up to $300 anytime soon.  :-[

On my list are:

beyer mv-100
pros: small, well reviewed, nice sound, nice price
cons: stepped gain?, no a/d

UA-5
pros: easy to power & use, several flavors of sound, un- or digi-mods are inexpensive, has a/d
cons: someone will have to help me here... Size? (bigger than the mv-100), a/d not needed with future flash recorder?

Other options?

Oh, in case you're wondering (probably not) I am still thrilled with the konnekt8 as a computer interface and plan to keep using it for home-recording. Otherwise I'd flip it to help raise some more cash...

the ua-5 probably is the best bet, a little more versatile and lots available.  Plus prices have dropped considerably.  Myself, I always preferred the warm mod.  You could probably pick up a non plus warm mod for around 350-375.  A little bigger than the mv-100.  Still a small box though.

One other option that comes to mind is the Denecke AD20. Self contained pre/ad in one unit powered by a single 9v battery. Can be found used for $200 and if the Superluxes require phantom power (I'm not familiar with them so don't know) add a Denecke PS2, also powered by a 9volt battery, and you're at your $300 budget.

I loved my trusty UA5 for a long time.  and the best part is they hold their value.  If you decide to flip it when you no longer want the A/D you'll get at least most of what you paid back out of it...

I was wondering who was gonna suggest the dual utility of the ad-1000 as a hot plate.

Honestly, in this heat this month, I can't consider one of those too seriously.

maybe in the fall. (they are sweet.)
