optical > iriver h120 -- am i missing something?

so i just got an iriver to mess around with as a bitbucket, and I know it can take optical in, just can't get any levels.  is there an analog/digital input option i missed or something?  its rockboxed.
audio:  cemc6/ck4 > silver clad > ua5 (wmod) > jb3 > svu1
photo:  d200 > 28-70mm f2.8, 50mm 1.8

Press the <A-B> key on the side of the H120 to get to the menu settings and then enter <Recording> menu.  Enter <Recordng Settings> Menu -> <Source> menu and choose <Digital>.  You know if it has worked if you see the LED from the optical out jack come on (but do not plug it in there, plug it in the jack next to that).  If you are still not getting a signal, I am not sure what is up.
