Then: Nakamichi CM300/CP-1/2/4 + Soundboard -> Audio-Technica AT4462 -> Sony TC-D5M
Now: Avantone CK-40 + Avantone CK-1 (Busman MOD) -> BusR4 (T+NF Mods)
Backup/Stealth: Sennheiser MKE > CA-9100 > Tascam DR2D

In this context... Matrix is simply mixing more than one source of audio... i.e. two sets of mics or soundboard and mics... into a single stereo recording.

When I bought that mixer in blah blah 80 something... we used it to mix a set of omnis in with the nak shotguns at Dead shows... Got some nice recordings from it... then when I started working as a FOH engineer for local bands, I used it to mix the board with a set of mics... We played a  lot of tiny rooms and it didn't always make sense to mic all the drums... kick and snare only... So I hung the mics in front of and over the stage somewhere and then used the mics to add what was missing from the board feed.

be well

Do a search for ENG mixers and you'll find a bunch of current offerings. On the high end Sound Devices 442 is awesome, and there are some new lower end offerings but I haven't seen any of them in person or know anybody using them. Popular ENG mixers include the SD, Wendt, Cooper, and dozens of others. Most are used in film and docs. But, I used the Wendt X2 and X4 for a number of years when I was doing music recording.
