For sound: CMC-4 (aka, AT853).  These are a good price now too.

For size: CMC-8 (aka, AT943).  These are also a good price.

By the way, if you buy CMC-8, you can buy adapters (AT-ADAPT, $5 each) and put AT853 capsules on later if you decide you want either a bit better sound, or maybe you have some AT853 caps lying around (like me).

PS: if you have problems with overloading at high sound levels, try building the battery box I describe at: www.cs.uwaterloo.ca/~mannr/AT853.
Mics: Sennheiser MKE2002 (dummy head), Studio Projects C4, AT825 (unmodded), AT822 franken mic (x2), AT853(hc,c,sc,o), Senn. MKE2, Senn MKE40, Shure MX183/5, CA Cards, homebrew Panasonic and Transsound capsules.
Pre/ADC: Presonus Firepod & Firebox, DMIC20(x2), UA5(poorly-modded, AD8620+AD8512opamps), VX440
Recorders: Edirol R4, R09, IBM X24 laptop, NJB3(x2), HiMD(x2), MD(1).

Is this a known fact that the CMC-4/AT853's sound better than the CMC-8/AT943's, or just a matter of opinion?  Is it proven, and is there evidence out there that the CMC-4's sound better?  I own the CMC-8's and think they sound great, but never read that the CMC-4's actually sound better.  Not trying to be difficult, I'd just really like to know...maybe I'll get the adapter and get some 853's if they really do sound better.

Thanks much!  :D

edit:  I'm running mine modded for phantom use only

Well.

I'm goona upgrade to a 3-wire battery box since I'm taping ONLY heavy metal loud shows.

Guess i'm being lightly brickwalled when the shows are really LOUD, I taped Opeth this saturday and even the floor was shaking because of the high leves that came out from the PA's... so I'm gonna make this 3 wire battery box in a short lead time. I thought on this upgrade when I ordered extra cable for my CMC-4 (at853), I'm pretty skilled into soldering, designing and electronics in general.

Thanks to poorlyconditioned I'll be able to save the 50$ upgrade from SP and the shippment cost!!
