ak40 vs m20 Blind Comp
« on: April 17, 2018, 01:04:25 PM »
Figure since I had both sources we'd have a little Pepsi challenge!

JBell's source is:

Microtech Gefell M20 > Nbob KCY> Naiant PFA (60V) > Sound Devices Mixpre-6

My source is:

Neumann ak40 > Nick mod lc3 > Naiant PFA > Sound Devices MixPre-6

Both sources 24/48, onstage, dfc, din on same stand on a vark bar so inches apart.  I had to invert the phase on the m20 source (see my other thread).  Other than that the only editing was a little gain on each.  I tried to get them as close as possible to each other.

I'll go ahead and say that I find very little difference between the two.  One perhaps has a little cleaner bass but I love both.  I can either post results in a few days or leave it blind and pm which is which.

They both sound good and neither jumps out to me as being superior but  I am at work and listening on headphones. I will listen later with speakers etrc but you might consider adding another poll option "no preference" or such...

Very slight preference for B. Just a hair cleaner to my ears, though both sources are quite pleasant for me.

I also have a  slight preference for B but went with neutral. B seems a tocuh "smoother" but they both sound good

Gave it a listen!!  I don't know which source is mine and both sound great.  I voted neutral since they both sound great.  I agree with everyone on a very slight preference to B.

Cool comp, thanks for posting it.  Will return tonight once I'm home to give a listen.

I compared a clip of the same song from each source using ABX Comparator in foobar2000.  I preferred B (I picked it out in 7 out of 10 trials..."Probability that you were guessing: 17.2%").

I'd very much like to know which source is which.  PM me if it's not too much trouble!

Great comp by the way.  Both sound excellent...the difference here is very minor, in my opinion.

Both sources sound awesome and I couldv'e easily picked neutral, but since it was a poll i wanted to pick one or the other! I picked A because of the slightly better low-end response :) And it seems that I'm the only one to choose A oddly enough lol 8)

I think source A is the MG's, and source B is the Neumanns!

Will yinz please let us know which is which?
