Title: Desktop Monitors Advice
Post by: yltfan on March 28, 2010, 03:12:24 AM
I need some decent speakers for playback and a little bit of mixing on the desktop, looking for advice:

--used KRK v4's for $275, maybe 250, from a store with 30 day return
--These new Tascams look ok, only $75 http://www.tascam.com/products/vl-m3.html
--Used M-Audio Studiophile BX5a for maybe $180 off craigslist
--used M-Audio av40 for maybe $80 off craigslist

What would you get?

Hydra Audio is about to launch a desktop monitor series...prototypes are already built.  I'll be offering something up for people to demo pretty quickly (like a week).
fyi...
single driver, very efficient.  will blow your head off w/a 15wpc T amp.
oh, and much less money than anything from a big company.
:)

otherwise, I vote for the M-Audio monitors.  the BX5 is pretty decent, imo

I have the KRK VXT4's, which is an upgrade over the V4's.  They absolutely kickass!

Who is Hydra Audio?  A web search comes back with account suspended for them.  I'm interested in a pair of desktop monitors, so far thinking of KRK's VXT 4's or 6's or RokitG2 5's or 6's, Audioengine 2's or 5's.  Might be interested in Hydra, looking for small but accurate nearfields to hook up to my computer for DAW editing application.

Both of these look to have good potential, a bit pricey though.

Has anyone done an A/B comparison of these two makes and models?  The KRK's are easy enough to find but the Genelec's are tough to find anywhere for an audition.

I'm looking and liking the krk rokit 6 with 68 watt power and a wide freq range.
but I also wrote Nick a message about his monitors but I didn't hear back from him yet.

Anyone ever try the krk rokit 6 out before?

Looks like I can actually try these out in a store here in my city.

thanks for the input! I really appreciate it.

I haven't heard of many people complain about these speakers. most people really like them but they have reservations about how much bass they think it should have. I think it would be adequate for most anyone.

I got the KRK v4's for $175--love them so far, but miss the more convenient power switch and volume control on most desktop systems

Everyone's ears are different, so you have to check them out for yourself, but I find they let my tapes sound how they sound. I feel I'm able to evaluate and master my recordings much more accurately than I have in the past; of course I'm going from years of listening solely on hi-fi speakers. That said, I still find them enjoyable for simple listening as well.

You might try Guitar Center for a Genelec audition if there's one near you, the one here in Chicago has both the KRK's and the Genelecs on display and hooked into a testing area. I have not done an A/B on these two but since I'm browsing monitors perhaps I'l swing by GC after mothers day brunch and see what I can hear :)

Thanks J, my Guitar Center only has the full KRK line in store but no Genelecs.  The GC could order the Genelec's if I wanted to buy them but they don't stock them.  Found I'll have to make a road trip closer to NYC area to actually give the Genelec's an audition, not sure about an A/B with KRK's though.

Rather than go the powered speaker route I picked up a T-amp from Parts Express and a pair of used Paradigm Atoms and have been very satisfied with the results. And all for just a little over $100.

I've got to put together a t-amp system.

Has anyone tried or currently using B&W MM-1 computer speakers for a DAW application?

So far Genelec 6010A's were extremely underwhelming, no where near as nice as KRK VXT 4's.
