Rhode SmartLav+ or Sony ECM 717

(1/1)

C1977:
Hi there,
startet taping in the mid 90ties.
In 2019 I've began taping with my Samsung S8 internal mics and an app able to record in wav.
The results in 70% came out really good depening where the phone was placed.
Now I would like to use the field recorder app with my new phone and think about
using the Rhode SmartLav+ or the old Sony ECM 717.
Never recorded anything with the Rhode. The Sony ECM 717 recordings are really cool.
What do you all think would be the better quality mic for rock shows?
Will you hear the mono/stereo difference when the mic is in fixed position?
The Rhode is a lot smaller than the Sony ECM 717. This would be a plus.
I already have the correct adaptors TRS (Sony) to 3,5mm and TRRS (Rhode) to USB.
Can imagine to get a Sony LVM 1 instead. This would be the cheapest compared
to the ones I have. Not sure about the quality. This is stereo lavalier, correct?
Any advice would be great!

Thanks
C

probably the 110 dB max SPL could be a problem with the Rhode SmartLav+
I was a constantly ECM-717 uses back in the 2000's and this small beast was able to handle every preasure
even close to the biggest speaker stacks, ... just my 2 cents !

Hi,
Just tested the S10 with these set ups.
Ecm 717 TRS to TRRS adaptor in the 3,5mm port has lot of hiss. Same with the Smart Lav+ TRRS connected to the 3,5mm port.
These two are mono.
Next test was Ecm 717 with Movo UCMA 1 TRS to USB C. This worked well without hiss and it's stereo!
Don't have any informationen about the AD conversion of the Movo UCMA 1.
I will try recording with this set up as soon as possible.
I'm using the field recorder app. The gain control is not available with my phone.
Are there other apps allowing this?

Why wouldn't you want to upgrade to the Sony ECM719?

ol' dirty taper:
I used the ecm-717 for my first mic and it performed well in almost every situation. When I was doing comparisons, it was my understanding the 719 had more self noise and less bass.
