JB3 question--- (Noob)
« on: March 29, 2009, 04:25:14 PM »
So I have decided to get the busman bsc1 package (already purchased) and a fostex fr2le (not yet purchased) as my starting rig, but was also interested in being able to get a soundboard patch along with my aud recording. I know there are 4-track recorders to accomplish this, but may be out of my price range. And I saw a jb3 in the yard sale for $50. Would I be able to patch directly from sbd to jb3? or is an a/d converter necessary? are there any good 4 track options in the $500 price range to substitute for the fr2le? thanks in advance..

I don't know of any 4-ch recorder options in the $500 budget range.  It's possible to record mics + SBD through a UA-5, in which case the Ua-5 functions like a mixer.  But this option has limitations because you can't adjust for time delay.

You could certainly use a JB3 for recording off the board. You'd just need the proper adapters to get an analog output from the SBD into the JB3.  Check the Cables forum for a link on how to do so.  Just as the FR-2LE has an ADC, so does the JB3, so you wouldn't need an external ADC.

Since you'd be recording with two different ADCs, and therefore two different clocks, you'd have some work to do in post-production to get the two sources sync'd up.  Check the Computer Recording forum for links to info on lining up these different sources.

board ot JB3 is easy...
be prepared with a pair of XLR (female) > stereo mini (1/8"), also a pair of 1/4" > stereo 1/8"...
But now with a new macbook, I can't get files off the JB3!

I just got an H4n to try out... we'll see how that goes... so far, loving it!

H4n! But the XLRs are reported to have high noise levels and meagre battery life on phantom.
