What's your favorite shock mount for kwon bar?
« on: April 04, 2008, 01:12:44 PM »
I've heard about the Joe Meeks JM27 and the SSM-5.  Best bang for the buck?

No problem.  backatya

I've use a variety of different shock mounts for my Kwon bars.  Joe Meeks, Avatones, etc. and found the Shure's to not only be the perfect size for the Kwon's but also the most low profile shockmount for them.

Best shockmount bar none is the new Rycote InVision series - just started shipping in all versions (a good month earlier than expected).

Only £30 in the UK and technically the best at any price.

Everyone I know is swapping all their shockmounts over to these.

John, I plan to get a few of those Rycote mounts for my Schoeps mikes, but I don't see one that would fit a Kwon bar, do you?

To be honest I have never heard of a "Kwon bar" and cannot find any information on such a thing.

But as an earlier post seems to recommend a standard shockmount I decided to mention the Rycotes.

After having tested pre-production prototypes of the Rycote, I am going to change all my shockmounts for them as are a lot of respected UK recording engineers I know.

I now wait the version for LDCs and will change those also when they arrive.

John here is a picture with a Kwon Bar in it.  There are three in this picture.  Two are in Schoeps A20 style mounts and to their immediate left is a Kwon Bar by itself.

After seeing what they are the Rycotes are not quite the right fit for this application.

I'm going to have to doubt that.  Don't elastic style mounts provide more isolation?   I've had good luck with hm30 rubber mounts (only $9 each!) but I always go with elastics when I'm on a bouncy/thumpy floor.

No - the new Rycote "Lyre" mounts provide better isolation than any elastic mounts - that's why it is heavily patented and that's why a  lot of pro engineers are swapping to the Rycote mounts.

Sorry - still can't work out what the Kwon bar is (maybe too much vino tonight).

The Rycote will fit any 3/8" thread and ant 5/8" (USA) thread with an adaptor.

Good to hear. I mainly wanted to point out that rubber bushings don't isolate as well as elastic. Of course bushings are small and Very durable. There are always tradeoffs. I don't doubt that modern computer modeling and material science have produced something better than time honored elastic suspension.  But those new Rycote's look both bulky to transport and spindly... like they'd be easy to break.

I may hold out for a solution that suspends my mics in spider silk.

Maybe these images will help. The Kwon bar is made by Robert Kwon and is not commercially available now that Cascade has closed. They provide easy to use setups of near coincident techniques for remote capsule microphones by Schoeps, Neumann and MBHO. Just snap the cables in place and the capsules are immediately in perfect arrangement for DIN, DIN-A or NOS depending on the bar used.

EDIT: to make this shorter and get names right  :P

They are as tough as old boots and impossible to break - many people have tried.

The Beta Testers were told to try and break them in testing - you can turn the "Lyre" inside-out and it is still OK.

They are not bulky and easy to use.

Wait 'till you see them in the flesh.

Actually the Rycote INV6 or INV7 would be perfect for this arrangement.

It would be what I would use if I had one.

Shame it's not available any more as I would probably buy some - especially as I'm about to get a pair of MKH 8040.

Not at all - it's just when a new product comes along that is vastly superior and cheaper than anything else on the market, I tend to get enthusiastic.

Well I guess in the case of Kwon Bars it is neither vastly superior nor is it cheaper than anything else on the market.    :)
