I wanted to use the Shure vert bar to run my LEs in XY vertically. Here's what I did:
-
I got a female coupling and piece of threaded rod. It's a tough size to find but I found it at Fastenal....1/4-28.
I also bought a piece of 1" dowl from home depot.
**EDIT** Moke has discovered that a piece of 1/2" pvc does the trick instead of the dowl....no drilling needed!
I cut the dowl 8" long using a circular saw. (a table saw would have been better).
I then screwed the female coupling to the top of the a27 bar and threaded my piece of rod into the other end.
-
I used a 3/8" drill bit and a cordless drill to drill from both ends. (This would be MUCH better done on a lathe or drill press. Drilling through the absolute center of the dowl is nearly impossible by hand)
Having drilled a hole through the length of the dowl I placed it on the threaded rod and coupling and placed the top half of the vert bar on top of that.
I left 1/4" of rod sticking out of the top to attach the tightening screw.

That's pretty much it. Sorry I'm not great at directions. :P I have enough supplies to make 3 more. PM me if you have questions on making one or would like one of the 3 I can make.

very very cool. A big +T to you!!!!! ;D
-
nice job!
lord help me when I start aquiring power tools...

Very cool setup, Brian!

For sure.....it's nice to have tools though. When you get an idea like this it makes it easier and more fun (it's always more fun with power tools)!! ;D
-
my dad is in construction so I always had tons of tools at my disposal.... lots of fun.
-
for some reason i thought the ADK's were a side address mic....
-
Using Mokes idea....I scrounged up a piece of sched 40 1/2" pvc from the garage.
-
T+ very nice!
-
Jeff,
Brian is hooking us up with one of his mod peices for the vert bar, because he's good people.
-
hell yea....another t+ :)
-
I added a coupling to each end of the pvc spacer. The coupling is almost the same size as the vert bar and ensures a square edge. :)
Last step....gonna bust out the black spray paint.
-
Moke I know...I should have a pair of those cutter anyway being an electrician. This is just a quick $1 solution.....and I like the larger diamater of the couplings.
Just painted it....pics when it's dry!!
Oh...and as for the TLs being shorter. Notice how the LEs come together and that the pieces of the vert bar are farthest apart. Spin them around (one or both as needed) to bring the shorter TLs together!

They are

Here's a pic of the final version all painted up.

+T brian, thats hella cool ;)

Very cool But I want to bypass the Sure ver thing all together and make one out of just PVC
after we move in this will be the first new DIY project
-
I don't think it would be impossible to make DIY vert bar....I don't think it would be cost/time effective though. By the time you get just the threaded rod and couplings needed you're close to $25. Another $5 for PVC parts that's $30 when you can get a Shure for $60.
It would be a pretty coold project to do for fun though. If you need any help on tracking down the right threaded rod let me know. :)
-
testing mine out for the first time tonight. Thanks again for hooking it up !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D
-
Your welcome guys and Moke if ya want parts #s and a phone number for Fastenall just PM me. ;D

Leave enough room on that for WINDSCREENS, Bri?
I'm playing around right now, with 2 of those mounts you have your mod'd bar on, in the rig thread, like $8 ea.. BUT in the case of the TLM-170's, you either have to use right angle cables on the mic side (DRATS, V3 side only) OR put on of the quick-release extensions on, so the mic cable will clear the screw-handle that the mic mount attaches to.
I'll post some pics soon. Meanwhile take into account, that windscreens on the mic's are likely going to increase the distance needed between them.

Yea...there is room for windscreens especially if you're running smaller LD mics like the TLs or u89s....... The beauty of the project is you can easily make the spacer as long or short as you need it to be for YOUR mics. :)

Thanks for all the info... I have just ordered a Matched Set of TL A51's... I need to build this little beauty. Any additional help would be appreiciated - especialy if someone has one laying around - Ha...

I LIKE THIS ONE! Very nice...I'll owe you some T's

there is info in the archive about part numbers in case you want to order. A guy here was supposed to make me one, but lied and bailed out on me, so I compiled the info myself..look in the archive.
also..wbrissette makes a wooden one..very nice. PM him if you are interested in seeking his help.
