Title: Where do I find (insert software here)?
Post by: wbrisette on April 01, 2006, 03:22:23 PM
Recently I have seen a few threads where people want to know where to get certain pieces of software.

Here are a few to start with, others can add to it as they see fit.
(moderators, can we pin this thread)?

Audacity (opens source multichannel audio software) -- Mac & XP
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/)

Fostex BWF Manager (for splitting Poly Broadcast WAVE Files) -- Mac & XP
http://www.fostexinternational.com/docs/pro_support/pro_bwf_manager.shtml (http://www.fostexinternational.com/docs/pro_support/pro_bwf_manager.shtml)

xACT Utility (for FLAC, Shorten, APE, and other compression options) -- Mac
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/21952 (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/21952)

Transmission (BitTorrent Client) -- Mac
http://transmission.m0k.org/ (http://transmission.m0k.org/)

Azureus (BitTorrent Client) -- Mac & XP
http://azureus.sourceforge.net/ (http://azureus.sourceforge.net/)

(add more as you like)

Good idea.  here's a few links that I've given out to folks recently...

FLAC Frontend - Windows
http://mikewren.com/page.php?2 (http://mikewren.com/page.php?2)

xACT - Windows
http://199.224.117.240/~scb/index.php?path=xactwin/ (http://199.224.117.240/~scb/index.php?path=xactwin/)

CD Wave - windows
http://www.milosoftware.com/cdwave/ (http://www.milosoftware.com/cdwave/)

Edit by BSkalinder:  Just a reminder about CD-Wave's license:

I think this is part of the reason many people haven't purchased their CD-Wave license (and one of the reasons I started this thread):  misunderstanding of the license requirements.  Purchasing a license if using the program beyond the 31-day trial period is not voluntary - it's compulsory to satisfy the terms of the license.  The author simply chose not to implement software mechanisms (like crippling the software after 31-days, or providing a limited-functionality demo) to compel people to purchase the license.  Nonetheless, users are obligated to purchase the license if they continue to use the software beyond the trial period.

Exact Audio Copy (http://www.exactaudiocopy.de)
Excellent CD ripping app.

GuildFTP (http://www.guildftpd.com/)
Freeware FTP daemon for running your own FTP server.

SmartFTP (http://www.smartftp.com/)
Nice freeware FTP client.

Filezilla (http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/)
Another nice freeware FTP client.

THE Rename (http://www.herve-thouzard.com/modules/wfsection/article.php?articleid=1)
Powerful app for batch processing file name and attribute changes.

i like how the one on 1-4a has a stardate option, haha.

I've not used the feature, but it looks like THE Rename allows editing and exporting of various tags (MP3, OGG, WAV, etc.).  I simply use it for batch renaming and attribute changing of the files themselves, though - never tried the tag features.

I think I'll try them out and see which I like better.  I don't really need the tagging feature

Tag & Rename

is the best tagger for mp3/flac/ogg that i've found.  however, it isn't free.

One of my archiving favorites lately is MD5summer (http://www.md5summer.org/)

i use this to make an md5 for each wav and this puts the md5 on the 72 HD so when i transfer the 24-bit files to the PC, i can verify after transferring

but for everything else, i use mkwact, just because its more widely used and when i make an md5 w/ md5summer and try to verify w/ mkwact, i miss an md5 summer file, and that makes me anal

but md5summer is a sweet app, even tho its substantially slower than mkwact

That's because MD5 Summer puts a ridiculous line at the top of each MD5 that reads "Created by MD5 Summer", and then skips a line before the actual MD5 contents...leading to MKW, xACT, etc. giving you an error message everytime.

I found this page very helpful last night:
Audacity Recovery Tool
http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php?title=CrashRecovery

There is no auto-recovery integrated into Audacity (yet) so, if you lose power, or Audacity crashes, your temp files are stranded. This will re-assemble them. If you are on Windows, use the command-line version written in C.

Obviously you can get there from the Audacity site somehow but, I had to Google it. Hopefully having the link here will save someone time.

Thanks to Freelunch for this file recovery tool link:

Update... Tried to use this tool to recovery a microtrack CF card. It recovered the files but they were garbage..

I tried another tool I've had luck with in the past, photorec.  It uses a different method and it recovered the files just fine.  So definitely give photorec a try if you're recoverin'..  it is shareware, runs under linux and windows and the source is available.

- Direct link to a neat free app for burning DVD videos with 24 bit audio tracks :
http://sourceforge.net/projects/audioplex/
- Some advice on restoring wav files if anything goes wrong while creating a DVD-V with Lplex, see thread at
http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,85244.0.html.
- Also useful: lpcm24, a free app that extracts a 24-bit audio track out of a raw LPCM file:
http://www.rarewares.org/others.html
and the well-known vstrip, an app that rips DVD-Vs and so can convert the vob files of DVD-Vs into other formats
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/vstrip.cfm
- To rip a DVD-Audio back to wav, see the apps posted in te following thread http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,85539.0.html
A free app is D. Chapman's ats2wav, (not easy to find so attached below)
The syntax is command line:
ats2wav D:\AUDIO_TS\ATS_01_0.IFO
typed in a command line window, after copying ats2wav.exe into the destination folder. You must "cd" into this folder in the command window prior to typing the above line. You'll possibly need to download the file cygwin1.dll from cygwin.com for it to work.

Thanks to Teddy for a master link in another forum that lead me to this tool:  Change Sample Rate (http://www.audiosignal.co.uk/Resources/changerate.zip), a utility that changes the WAV header to the user's desired sample rate.  It does not perform sample rate conversion.

Audiomove is really handy for sample & bit rate conversions

http://www.lcscanada.com/audiomove/

AudioMove is a simple, easy to use GUI-based batch audio file copy-and-conversion program.

You just tell it what files to convert, what format to convert them to, and where to put the output files, and it does it. AudioMove has the following features:

   1. Converts from any format that libsndfile can read, to WAV or AIFF format
   2. Uses libsamplerate for high-quality sample rate conversion to various sample rates (11.025kHz-192kHz)
   3. Supports 8-bit, 16-bit, 24-bit, 32-bit, or floating-point output sample widths
   4. Specify files to convert using file requester or drag-and-drop
   5. Multithreaded design for faster processing on multiprocessor machines
   6. Pipelined dataflow for efficient resource utilization
   7. Recursively batch-convert entire directory trees in a single step
   8. Conversion-batch sizes may be arbitrarily large (e.g. thousands of files at a time)
   9. Can be controlled from the command line (useful for invoking batch conversions from scripts)
  10. No installation necessary -- just unzip and run (well, actually the Win32 version does come as a .msi file)
  11. Qt-based GUI means AudioMove is portable to most major OS's
  12. Open source (GPL); source code is available below
  13. SUSE 9.1, MacOS/X and Windows binaries available below for your convenience.

SoX http://sox.sourceforge.net/ - Super handy for merging, sample rate, and bit reduction. It can also take care of fades and has a ton of features I never used before. Available free for Mac, Win, and Linux.

I like to merge and re-sample on the fly, in one step, so as to not get funny results at the end points between files. Sometimes, the merged 24 bit files can be too big to work with so this program has been a savior for me.

This is a command line tool only so if you are big on GUIs you probably won't like it. The documentation is good though and it only takes a little practice to get nice results.
