UA-5 as a playback device?
« on: June 05, 2009, 10:04:06 PM »
I have a UA5 that i didnt use for two years.

My soundcard broke, I was thinkink on the possibility of using the UA-5 as a sound card (external DAC, and plug there my speakers and phone)
Is it possible/recommended or am I saying something crazy?

Are you looking for an inexpensive soundcard?

Post an ISO in the Yardsale and I'm sure you'll find one

If you have powered speakers you can plug them into the analog outputs and they will work just fine. Otherwise you need to feed your amp with the analog out from the UA5.

The headphone amp is nothing fancy but it's just as good as similar units like firebox etc...

You may have to run the installation CD. It seems like I remember when I did this same thing all my audio editing software recognized the UA5 but I could not get XP to make it the default playback device for everything Windows related.

Fyi... I really like the ua5 as a supplemental playback device.  Mostly while mastering and evaluating recordings on the pc.  My ua5 goes into the pre-amp of my main hi-fi.

I really like having the ua5 volume knob right next to the pc so I can twist it to control the headphone and speaker levels.  It is also handy for the rca in/out features. I don't use the ua5 in the field.

The audio quality is merely fair.  Not as good as a squeezebox, etc.
