Title: Opinions on Tascam M-30 Mixer?
Post by: down2earthlandscaper on July 18, 2015, 09:57:22 PM
I have a chance to pick up a vintage Tascam M-30 mixer.
I've searched the forum here and haven't had any luck finding info on these. Google reveals a handful of info and opinions, but I'd be very interested (and appreciative) to hear from TS members any experience/thoughts/opinions you have with this unit.

Thanks

We had one of these for recording with a band I was in way back when. In the 80s they were highly regarded as flexible home recording desks. There are lots of buss mix options and the preamps are nothing special but plenty usable and I think it had sweeps on two of the EQs. We had some kind of funky wiring setup that allowed the use of the four mix busses to feed an 8 track reel to reel. The thing that makes it kind of outdated is the use of RCA jacks for everything except the mic inputs. No phantom power either IIRC. Sounded pretty good for a home studio setup back then with just dynamic mics and no outboard gear. VU meters  8). We used it for tracking and then the other direction to mix down to two track.

What do you plan to use it for?

Also, I wouldn't pay much for one of these. <$100

To be quite honest, it would probably end up being a very large and heavy paperweight ::)

I was just curious about it because it was offered to me - I picked up 4 Tascam PE-120 mics dirt cheap and they had the mixer too.

I think $20 each was a good deal on these. I won the one mic and inquired about what else they had - turns out 3 more identical  ;D

Thats a lot of Primo caps - these are Nakamichi clones according to what I've read here.
