Title: portable table?
Post by: lastnightsverse on December 18, 2021, 12:36:55 AM
New taper here, been heading into a jazz club for a residency, they have a bunch of folding tables & I'm friendly with the engineer so I haven't had to worry about it. I want a small folding table that I can keep in my car and easily pop up during soundcheck, just big enough for my Macbook and my 4channel interface, not much bigger, so I don't have to take up much room. anyone have suggestions on this? thanks!

How about a "TV Tray"?
T@rget has these for $12 right now

Gaff tape it underneath where the legs slide into the bottom of the table, so if it gets bumped it won't collapse.

It happens..

You might look into some of the camping accessory options. There are a number of small tables that easily breakdown for transport.

As an example, it looks like pretty much everything on Byer's site is on sale right now (link to the large table below). I've been real happy with by Byer EasyCot and have almost pulled the trigger on some of their table options. I'm currently eyeing the TriLite stool on sale for $20. This would be nice to have for taping occasions where seating doesn't exist and you need to rest the legs for a minute or two.

I swear by this 18" LL Bean table, super portable, takes seconds to assemble, and sturdy.

I own one of these. It is nice, maybe a bit to large for a club situation, but any outdoor situation it would be ideal.
One other positive note: It folds up into a very compact storage footprint.

Another option....Small rugged tables for laptops and other gear in the field. See these often at sports events, remote broadcasts, etc. Many sizes and heights. I've used one for years to hold gear next to my keyboard rig at gigs. Nice folks...they will customize if you wish.

Similar to that LL Bean one, Walmart sells a table that breaks down and wraps up in a carry sac. I use it for camping and other outdoor activities. It is called the "High Tension" table and would probably work for you, as it is pretty taught when deployed, albeit obviously not as sturdy as fixed table. Cup holders might come in handy for you too ;)

I have a lot of these:
https://www.amazon.com/Samson-Technologies-SALTS50-LTS50-Laptop/dp/B00OZES766

Samson LTS-50 (aka SALT50)

I stopped using my desks completely after getting them (I live glued to my laptops)---they are just super comfortable, as if you want you can tilt the keyboard down a bit (easier to type than flat) and set the height of the table just right for you. I added this 'clamp on shelf':
https://www.adorama.com/lasmt01.html

to hold a couple small stacked interfaces (mixpre-6, mixpre-d). I also sometimes use that 'add on shelf' on the side of a mic stand to hold mixpres (though sometimes it's easier to just screw those into a clamp or magic arm and clamp them on)

I don't think it would hold a person, but I have put a 50lb speaker on it and that was OK. The cam clamps also have an inner adjustment with a screwdriver so if you want you can set them so they're VERY secure when locked down. Also, it has a pin system you can pop in to make sure it can't collapse when extended. They fold down pretty small, and the tables can be completely removed if you need it to pack into a briefcase.

They also come with a silicone pad that makes your laptop stick to it (it's not sticky, just has incredible friction)---you could knock the table over 60° and I doubt your laptop would fall (no need to strap your laptop on in case of clumsy passers by).

I personally would not put a full laptop onto an 'add-on-shelf' on your mic stand---you need something that can hold not only your (pretty light) laptop, but also your (not light) typing hands/arms. I'd be nervous to risk it even with my bigger 20+lb cap stands---don't want to drop a laptop and recorder/preamps and mics all in one fell swoop...
