Fostex FR-2 is kinda around, but I haven't seen it.
Someone is claiming to be beta-testing the SD744, lucky-dog !
Marantz has something out but uses microdrive harddrives (2.4 GB).
There's a few mini-mixer recorders, like from Korg, Mackie,Yamaha, Fostex, Alesis, Zoom, Roland, Akai,  etc.  most are multi-track.
Pro stuff a.k.a. Nagra and StellaDAT II is out,  if you got the $$$$

I have a  Palm-pilot-sized iPAQ3650 that has digi-in for recording, but no analog section.

There's the iRiver and Nomad JB3 "jukebox" recorders.

There are about 10 other stand-alone devices ready to be released. I may make a list and put it on my website.
If you know of any, e-mail them to me  !
wabi_sabi[AT]linuxmail.org
make the " [AT] "an "@"  it keeps some of the Spam in the can.

There seem to be more Video Hard drive recorders now than audio,  harumpppf !  It can only mean good things coming, however.

Maybe 2004 will be the year laptops disappeared from the taping scene ...

Big $$$$ The StellaDAT II is $13,000 , I think.
If the Nagra is less than 6Gs, it should be ashamed of itself.
I'll bet it weighs a ton. as well.

We used a reel-to-reel  Nagra many years back. "Borrowed" it from the film school at CUNY for a few weeks.  The instrument weighed like a stone, ate  power like a glutton, and sounded like a dream. Used some proprietary compression thing to get great dynamic range and very low noise.  After we returned it, we were told that it had a $8000 pricetag.
Everyone was shocked that a little tape recorder could be worth so much......................

Does the Archos have an optical in? I thought that one was analog line in only ... at least the very first models were. They've probably changed since.

I traded emails with the guy at SD last week.  He wrote that the 722 was going beta in February.  He told me last summer that the 744 would beta first.  So something should come out soon.  But the first thing out is probably the high end unit, not the two channel.

So any final word on whether the Archos Gmini 220 is worth getting over a JB3?

So it's safe to say that there isn't going to be an affordable portable alternative to the jb3 any time soon huh ?  I'm talking below $500, for recording over 16/44.

Looks like I'm carrying around my lappy for another year ??

The edirol R-1 actually looks like it might be something in that ballpark.

if doug is able to mod it (as he has mentioned on his board he is looking at) to take a digi signal....the R1 could be this years UA5 at that price point...

Yeah but would it be bit perfect?  And there would still be a 2 gig limit. :(

and 24/44.1 seems kinda silly. and yeah, youd be getting "tape flip" style gaps when the 2 gb card ran out and youd have to switch to a new one.

And why does 24/44.1 seem silly? If you study Nyquist's theorem, as has been pointed out in several discussions I've been involved in with DSP engineers, you'll find that the sampling rate doesn't matter nearly as much after about 40K. The big band for the buck is going from 16 to 24 bits.

Looking at what a lot of tapers are using for mics, they really aren't going to be able to tell the difference between 24/48 or 24/96 and 24/44.1.

We spend a lot of time talking about specs and theoretics, yet we spend so little time really trying to experiment and understand why things work the way they do in the field.

2 GB is about 2 hours give or take a few minutes. Only rarely do I go to a show where pulling out a card and putting in a new card would be troublesome. In fact, most of the time the set break would be where you could do your card swap. Now, that's not to say that you won't end up on occasions running close or out of space at 24/44.1, but it's not going to be the norm, it will be the exception.

Anyhow, this isn't targeted directly at you, so don't take it like that.

That'd probably be the push I need to go to 24-bit.  Hmmmmm...gonna have t ostay up to date on the Oade Bros thread.

Now that I'm doing 24-bit recording, I find it amazing. As sweet of a A/D converter the AD2K+ was, keeping things in 24-bit is something it couldn't touch.

Going to 24-bits is like adding omni mics to your rig. Once you do it, you don't want to go back.

got the little ARCHOS today just to test out....if it works, GREAT, if not, I already have a HD music player...

Dis you get the Gmini 220 or the Gmini 400?

The 400 looks pretty decent.....doesn't it record to wav. 16/44.1?  that's good enough for me.

I see mentioned a 2gb limit on Wave, but Neuros units at soundproffessionals specifically say they can do a 4gb wave-my guess is if they can-probably Edirol's r1 can too. The R1 base price is reasonable-but you need to add in the CF card. Obviously a $500 pre and a $500 AD/DA won't be in your sub-$500 shirt pocket size recorders
