Sony HX9V import issue (HELP!)
« on: April 13, 2013, 04:47:40 PM »
I bought a new 64 Gig SanDisk SDXC card for my Sony HX9V primarily to use for an upcoming show that was about 2.5 hours in length (I wanted to avoid swapping out cards).  The camera does support SDXC cards.  Shot the video and am able to playback on the camera with no problems.  Everything looks great.  However, when I try and import the files to my PC the Sony software finds nothing to import and if I connect directly to the card the usual directory that contains the files is not there.

Since I can view the files using the camera, they must be located somewhere on the card!  Any suggestions on how to retrieve the video files from the card?  Thanks for any and all help.

When I said that I connect directly to the card I meant not going through the camera software but opening the folders directly.  However, the card is in the camera and not a card reader.  My current card reader does not support the sdxc format.  I have one on the way from Amazon that does.

I've never had this happen before, but is it likely that when I open the card using a card reader that the mts files will be there?  Just strange if it does because in the camera the card looks pretty much empty even though it has to have the files on the card somewhere since I can play them back fine.  Thanks.

You are looking in the PRIVATE> AVCHD > BDMV > STREAM folder?
That is where AVCHD files would be

If you recorded in MP4 mode then they would be in the MP_ROOT > 100ANV01 folder

When I look at the folder I only see the following 3 directories: WINMODULE, MACMODULE, and PMBP_Mac.app.  And when I check how much space is used it says 14.7 MB.  This does not make any sense because I can play the entire set of files (2.5 hours of video) so they have to be located somewhere on the card.

You have never supplied enough info, like if you are doing this on a mac or PC? and operating system

On some of my caards when I open them it opens a utility directory(like you described above) and then a 2nd device directory with the data(videos)

I am doing this on a PC running Windows XP.  The device directory that appears includes 2 files: BLTINMEM.IND (0 KB) and VOLUMEID.IND (1 KB).  The SONY software also comes up.

Your missing the point, your looking in the wrong directory,  you are seeing the utility directory, there is another directory with your video files.

I always use the memory card directly into a card reader so those files you mention dont sound familiar i dont recall seeing them.Did you fill the SDXC card did some files go onto the internal memory?I think you have better luck with a card reader. What happens if you take some photos onto that card and a small movie and try to hook up again can you see those new files?

Problem solved!  Because SDXC cards are intended for sizes all the way up to 2 TB, the FAT (exFAT in this case) is different from SDHC cards.  This means that the SDXC card is often not compatible with OS's prior to Windows 7.  I was using XP at home and decided to bring the camera into the office to give it a try.  Sure enough, using Windows 7, all of the files were there on the card in the usual place.  What a HUGE sense of relief!

Thanks everyone for the help!  Very much appreciated.  Hope my brush with incompatibility helps someone else in the future who might encounter the same thing.
