Countryman B3 2.2k or 4.7k mod? With PIPsqueak
« on: May 07, 2015, 12:33:08 AM »
Well I have read darn near every thread on the Countryman B3's including rereading many that I posted on 5 years ago.
I have yet to grab a pair of these fine mini omnis.
I think now is the time therefore I pose this question:

Should I do only the 2.2k mod or the 4.7k mod?
I now have a Naiant PIPsqueak to power the mics and would run that into my M-10.
Mostly I don't see loud rock or metal shows. I do like funk and jazz  including acid jazz, jam bands and other singer songwriter or bluegrass. Usually I am running open, but like another option instead of my AT 853's if I need to be super ultra low profile  >:D

I am thinking from what I have read I may only do the 2.2k mod instead do the 4.7k mod

PIPsqueak specs here: http://naiant.com/pipsqueak-specification/

states:
Quote
Type: two-channel battery-powered microphone amplifier.
Plug-in Power: +7V supplied across 6.8KΩ resistor, 1mA maximum
Current (from 4.8V NiMH battery):  6mA

thoughts ?

thanks

You'll be fine with the 2.2k mod, especially as you'll be powering them with a battery box.  As it stands, they're rated for a max SPL of 140 dB.  I pulled the trigger on putting together a set of B3's last year, had the 2.2k mod done on them and, used with a battery box, they've taken everything I've thrown at them without even a hint of distortion.  That includes stack-taping and another show where I had the mics attached to the stage monitors and hanging in front of the grilles (that concert is HERE if you're interested).  Great microphones, BTW, I'm extremely happy with mine.

^^^ Thanks

I have also been thinking about no mod but it seems
the the 2.2k would be the safe way to go.
