I like Shure’s Motiv Audio even when I am not using my MV88. It is free.
Roland R-07 -> FEL Communications Clippy EM172 Omnis or pair of RØDE Lavaliers.
iPhone 14 -> Shure MV88 or Sennheiser AMBEO Smart Headset

why does he not want to record to mp3? mp3 and wav are both going to be low quality thru the phone's mic

I like Shure’s Motiv Audio even when I am not using my MV88. It is free.

I concur, this is my go-to with the d:vice and DPAs. Though I do find the level meters a bit inaccurate.
Mics: Schoeps MK4V, MK41V, MK5, MK22> CMC6, KCY 250/5, KC5, NBob; MBHO MBP603/KA200N, AT 3031, DPA 4061 w/ d:vice, Naiant X-X, AT 853c, shotgun, Nak300
Pres/Power: Aerco MP2, tinybox v2  [KCY], CA-UBB
Decks: Sound Devices MixPre 6, Zoom F8, M10, D50

Voice Recorder Pro and Apogee MetaRecorder are both better,
the metering is only one of the things that are better. My opinion, feel free to try yourself. These are free too.

MetaRecorder is very nice, I agree, but you need to pay if you want to record more than 60seconds. But a good chance to try it out before deciding.
