Millennia Preamp
« on: October 31, 2019, 12:42:26 PM »
I know that separate preamps have somewhat fallen out of favor with the plethora of high quality all in one recorders, but does anyone here run one of the Millennia portable preamps?  What do you think of them?  Mulling acquiring one as it can do double duty for studio recording as well.

I have a couple TD1s, which are transportable, but not really portable in a way that tapers would like. And they require 120v.  I’m looking at the newer smaller models that can be battery powered.  They make a single and double channel unit.  They aren’t that common, or at least I don’t see much in the way of used units for sale.  The TD1s are kind of a Swiss Army knife in that they have a single channel of transparent pre, together with tube and solid state DI, reamp, and EQ.  And the lights are festive.  The pres are nice and similar to Grace pres (another flavor of transparent).  I wouldn’t mind another pair, but thought the more taper friendly version would be more useful at this point.

The HV32P is interesting looking. And the lights are definitely festive! Id like to hear what it can do.

I’ve been looking for one at a decent price, but haven’t seen anything yet.  Mostly the usual vendors selling at the same “street” price.

Have you considered the new Sonosax dual pre? For a couple hundred dollars more you would be getting a (subjectively) better preamp and a lot more features.

Mostly I’m looking to match it up with the two TD-1s I already have so I would have 4 channels of Millennia pres.  Although I do remain interested in running separate pres since I tape openly and the only issue is power, not stealth.

I have thought about a Portico from time to time.  Although I am aware of a few people who run one, I don't know of anyone running a Millennia HPV32 or even the Millennia single channel model.  If I found one for a decent price I would take the leap.

I just want to say that in the top rank of professional classical music recording, Millenia Media preamps have been considered among the most transparent for many years.

That is my understanding as well.   :coolguy:  A staple for classical recordists (which I am not). I do like my TD-1s, but as I noted, above, they are more transportable than portable.  I would like the same sound in a battery powered model that I can throw in a bag.

I remember reading the notes for all of my favorite Telarc classical CDs, where they listed the equipment used.  The three brands that got very frequent mention were Schoeps, B&K, and Millenia.

Alright.  Finally landed one.  HV-32P two channel model.  Just in time for the Holidays' run of shows.  We'll see.

Nice.  Record something beautiful with it, and let us hear the results!

Hello,
I'm interested in the HV-32P and wondered how you liked it and how it compares to your DAV BG1.
Thanks
