Sound Devices 302
« on: December 10, 2019, 08:34:32 AM »
Hi folks...

When I need a pre-amp, I use a SD-302 with an SD-744T.  The mics that usually run through the 302 are Crown CM-700's, and the 302 runs into the line in TA3 inputs of the 744.

My question is, do I need to attenuate (which would be through the 302) the microphones?  I'm having an issue with my levels, and although the end result works out fine, I feel it could be better.  I can't match the levels of the 302 and 744 by using the 1K tone because, although the levels can be brought up to 0 on the 302, I can't even get the 744 to -12 that way, and was wondering if it's because of microphone attenuation.  I need to double check, but I may have the 302 set for -10db att.

This isn't making much sense to me, so I thought I'd turn to those experienced tapers that have used a 302, and possibly the 302>744 pair.  I can still adjust the levels, to a point, on the 744 to bring them up, but I'd prefer to match the tones and have complete control over the line in with the Crown mics on the 302, as it is intended to do.  If the attenuation isn't the issue, and I honestly don't think it is, what else might I be doing wrong?  FYI, when using the pre in this manner, I'm running Nak 700's directly into the mic/line XLR inputs.

TA3 is -15db output by default. If you want Line level (0db) you have to go into the setup menu and change it. The XLR output in the menu controls both TA3 and XLR.  Check out how its done in the owners manual. Hope this helps.

Thank you, I will look into this once I get home form work.  I didn't think -10db on the 302 would cause this issue, but a total of -25db would certainly explain it!  Hope it's that simple  :)
