The Hypothetical: Battery Breakthrough

New tech doubles battery capacity, cuts costs:

I hope this easily translates to low-voltage that tapers need.

electrochemistry is always evolving, but not as fast as circuit efficiency

i feel like we already won, with the amazing efficiencies of all our gear today
more efficient mic preamps
better and more efficient preamps
better and more efficient recorders

its simply astonishing what we can do today

Good point, but there are some benefits in the older gear, I guess mostly in SNR and channel cross-talk.
I don't doubt that new gear will overcome a good deal if that.
Sonosax, Sound Devices, Grace, seem to not be too large, but remain exceptionally clean.

well at least 2 out of 3 of those have kept current product lines that exceed their older, larger gear in specs

id love to see a Grace take on an all-in-one

its really the modern op-amps and SOCs that were game changers, both in performance and efficiency

All about the analog in and out from my perspective.
Bear in mind that a twisted pair of wires is all digital needs, if all on one silicon die, even that is moot.
The analog circuit design has all the variables. Enter Oade, Busman, Naiant, etc.

Is anyone field taping with digital mics ?
The TLM 103 D MT pair seemed promising, but then Neumann announced EOL on Solution-D

digital signal sure, digital processing, no. the opamps,  ADCs and SOCs we have nowadays simply didnt exist 10-20 years ago. the improvements in ADCs alone are probably the singlemost significant difference in the last few decades.
