Will a Bogen 3373 Be Sturdy Enough?
« on: May 25, 2007, 12:28:06 PM »
Is my Bogen 3373 (I think that's the model #) sturdy enough for a festival?
Or do I need a more heavy-duty stand?

Is that the one with the thin legs rather than round ones? I think I might just have one (I can't remember the model right now) and I've run LDs on it at full extension. It wasn't pretty, but it worked. I'd suggest dropping $40 on one of the Dynatran stands from Amvona on eBay. They're plenty beefy and I haven't had any issues with mine.
Pockets full of nickels and nothing left to eat, and I'm stuck behind a semi on Soniat Street.

If the 3373 provides the height and stability you need / want indoors, it'll do the same outdoors.  My preference for festivals:  bring a clamp, and let someone else lug around their stand (though the 3373 is mighty compact and easy to schlep).

the 3373 is nice for festies b/c it is very light and portable, will work fine for a few sets of actives.  I also like my 3320 which is a little bigger when collapsed.  Currently I carry my 3373 but clamp whenever I can.  Generally at festies I never run above head height, being FOB and all.

So far as I know, I will be the only one there . . . unless rowjimmytour changes his mind.

Thanks, guys, for the imput.  Looks like I'm all set for the weekend:

I love those 3373s.  I own 3 of them :)

A couple tips I've found to be helpful...

The long legs make the footprint a little too big in certain situations.  So I hacked 2 of them.  Now I have 1 with the normal longs legs. 1 hacked pretty much as far down as I could get but still be pretty stable. And 1 hacked right in the middle of the two. I use all 3 in different situations but generally carry the middle one for Festivals.

Also, take off the rubber feet when using the 3373 outside.  That way the legs act like stakes and you can push them into the grass/dirt for more stability.

Nice idea.  In the past, I've used tent stakes to secure the legs.

Great suggestion, Carl.  Thank you !

We used the 3333 for LL at UCSB w/ my LD's and your actives but this was indoor w/ duct tape. Out door I suggest tent stakes w/ these attached to the legs for stability.

I then drilled holes up a couple inches from my legs at a angle and then drilled my shoes at the same angle. I then take a tent stake and drive it thru on all three legs and if ya want you can take a bungee cord and wrap it around the stakes and legs for added security of drunks.

Which Dynatran stand would you suggest?

I found the AS-9110 that looks like it will go all the way up to 13 or 14'

Maybe a bit much for most situations.

Thanks for the suggestion, I've been looking for a decent stand as well.

I picked up one of the AS-9110, $20 or so delivered.  It has a fairly large footprint and is not a small package.  That said, I've taken it out several times and run it from 6' to 10' without incident.

I may be the dissenting voice here, but the Bogen 3373 stand is a POS.  I used it and it literally fell apart, piece by piece over the course of a year.  Ask Nick Gregory about my struggles with it; he provided the clamp assist so many times when I had that thing.  It is light and cheap, but crappily constructed.  I bought a used A.E.A. stand and it has served me much, much better.  A new A.E.A. is twice the price of the Bogen, but is much more rugged and will last you forever.

I have a 3373 and have used it steadily since around the summer of 2003.  It works like a tank.  No loose parts, no pieces falling off.  When it folds up the legs protrude out a little bit so my legs are hacked back about 4"-6" to make it fold up much more compact and to give it a smaller footprint.  One of these days I'll take a picture of it and post it.
