Title: When 😈ing are you straight....or not so much?
Post by: MakersMarc on March 28, 2019, 11:56:30 PM
If no one wants to weigh in I’ll ditch this. Thought this topic might be amusing.😀

Have had close calls. There’s an awesome of story of an unnamed taper at the Cabooze in Minny. That he just let it fly to the horror of all. No drinking anything for me. Stick with gummies.

I remember hearing and laughing about a tape where the *wink* Taper went and used the bathroom during the show...  but too many beers have erased anything more than a brief "I think"...

Good times...

I very very rarely drink, stealthing or not.  It's rare enough that for practical purposes it's basically the same as "never."

I'll sip on a beer or two during a show when I am stealth mode. About the only time I ever have a beverage.

I'm old and already have to piss like three times without water or booze, just to get empty to make it through 2-3 hours. I tape open rarely but when I do, it's with a bourbon in hand. Two three is my limit, don't enjoy it past that.

I quit booze 15 years ago but drinking a water or a soda during the show - for sure. More often than not I'll have a friend in the audience who will get me a refill during the show because once i get into my desired spot I'm likely not moving for a few hours. I never drink enough to put myself in danger of exploding. However no food whatsoever before the show. I'm not risking needing to go #2 for the obvious reasons and plus many clubs have such awful facilities I'll do anything to not have to use the restroom.

Funny story about The Cabooze in Minneapolis and why using the bathroom during the show is hazardous. There was a period of time around early 2000's when I would frequently see Joey Molland (original Badfinger guitarist) all over Minneapolis in the audience at shows and he was always insanely drunk. One night at the Cabooze I walked into the bathroom and while I'm standing at a urinal doing my thing I hear a voice with a British accent behind me just cursing up a storm. I didn't see anyone else in the bathroom when i walked in so I was surprised that someone else was in there too. The voice was coming from one of the stalls and the Cabooze had removed all of the doors on the stalls.  In his stupor for some reason this person thought I worked at the Cabooze and he starts giving me an earful about the 'no door' policy in the bathroom. At this point I cant see anybody still but I'm trying my best to finish up my business and get out of there ASAP. I'm trying to agree with the voice and I'm replying to the verbal abuse barrage I was getting that the no stalls is complete BS but there was nothing I could do. Just as I finish, start zipping up, and turn to walk to the exit there's a knee walking intoxicated Joey Molland with his pants down around his ankles holding a roll of TP getting in my face. He's yelling so much he's bright red and he spitting all over the place. I realize who it is and I just start laughing at how ridiculous this whole scene is and I just get the f out there and go back out to where the stage is hoping Joey doesnt follow me and/or catch up with me later. Fortunately that was the last I saw of him that night. I'm guessing he got '86'd and poured into a cab.

I did this at a Dweezil Zappa show in '08 or so. With binaural mics no less:)

I've done two 007 shows in the last two weeks. That's more than I did in the entire year of  '18.

I rarely if ever go under cover but if I do I figure out a way to park the rig somewhere. I can't enjoy a show if I can't move around, get a beer, take a piss break. Taping a show  >:D is not worth being uncomfortable and staying in one place not moving for several hours is uncomfortable for me.

I may go hat rig on Saturday though. Seated in a casino performance theater for Willie Nelson. If I have to get up and the GF wants to go at the same time I'll just put the hat on the seat and hope for the best. I hate to think like this but - what if it's his last show?

reply #2 ..... I've got hundreds of recordings where within 5 minutes of the performance ending I bolt straight to the bathroom to relieve myself all suited up in the human mic stand costume and now captured for posterity for anyone whoever gets a hold of my unedited master files. What are you gonna do? When nature calls.

Priceless, Perks. Ah the Cabooze. Great if you could get up on the center pillar otherwise a fucking chat fest. Did love the $4.75 tall boy Oatmeal Stout. Lots of Salmon, NMAS, Rads, nothing but fond memories.

No drinking, don't want to have to pee
Although I do usually have a buddy bring me a double whiskey with about 30 minutes left in the show.

I’m my twenties I had to hit the can twice during shows (1 Robert Plant and 1 Ahmad Jamal) and once pissed in an empty beer cup at my seat in a large theatre type show and nobody seemingly noticed.  After s couple hundred I don’t stealth much anymore

I do recall the story about a taper making an utter fool of himself at a Black Crowes show on pills and alcohol.  No names to protect the guilty, but I think a few others have heard the story.

Going back to the drinking part of this.  I can't count the number of times friends want to meet at a bar beforehand for food and drinks and do not understand  >:D tapers have a job to do.  For the Nick Mason show in LA I had 3 separate offers.  After seeing the show the night before, waking up driving 6 hours the absolute last thing I would do is  want to drink before a show.

If it's a hot day, you gotta have some water, and you'll sweat it out before you gotta pee if you sip slowly (one sip per song.)

No snacks with crinkly wrappers! No crunchy snacks to chew with mics on your head!

I have one recording I made where I'm like WTF is that crunching sound? Later, I remembered it was the song where I had a snack, like a almond bar or something. d'oh!

Alcohol before a show is a terrible idea, but I love FOBSTL's cocktail plan. Best idea yet.

I'm at the place to enjoy myself. That involves at least a couple of drinks and some smoke. I know not to overindulge because the Tiny Town sheriff is always on the prowl at 1 am and needs very little reason to pull you over. My insurance rates do not need a DUI

From the horse's mouth, more or less.

A little further down that same page...
...should ring a bell or two for someone.  ;)
if you're gonna hat it, jackass, don't drink. worst thing ever. I'd absolutely flatten someone on the spot for pissing themselves at a show, or pissing on the floor.

Ah gotta love old quotes. Now I’d just laugh and stay away from the puddle.😀

Taping is serious shit with me.  I never get stoned, I never drink alcohol.  I barely sip water.  I never leave my seat.  There is time enough for getting high after the show.

I have had issues carrying around the gear at the snack stand, in bathrooms, or just walking around.  Some venues have roving security folks on the lookout for gear or suspicious activity, so it is just best to stay sober, stay dry and stay in your seat.

So unlimited PCP, heroin and bath salts?

No drinking during the show but after a stressful  >:D show I have been know to drink some folks under the table if I am at a hotel.   I still recall the Clapton Vegas show with my security run in.  I was amped up after that one and after the show we sat down in a hotel bar. My friends left me after I downed 3 doubles in succession.  I stayed for a few more rounds before I could sleep.

Are you trying to say stealthing might turn me gay? :P

Seriously though...if I'm wearing the mics liquid stops going into me a few hours before doors and a pee as much as possible to avoid having an issue. I love beer so it's hard not to partake, but I've had some emergencies in the past and they aren't pleasant.

Recently I've given up the ideal spot for some shows (mainly bands that don't put on that great of shows) and run the rig off my body (usually the front row of the balcony. Just did that last weekend and it was nice to be able to get up grab a beer and take a wiz whenever I wanted (was with friends so they could watch the rig.

Those were the Grateful Dead taping section days.  Then it was who could get the most wasted it seemed.  I still remember a Greek Theater show when a taper with a PCM-F1 and TLM 170's hooked something up wrong and next thing I saw was smoke rising from his gear.    Running  >:D none of that works.

Funny story, only once in over 1000 shows
I had to pee so bad I got up left my seat went to the
bathroom walked back to my seat all in 90 seconds.
My friends thought I was having a heart
attack because I never leave my seat for anything!
Having friends there made it easy to patch my recording later.

Before and during shows I don't drink. I'm there to do get the job done. Stealth taping - audio and video - is hard work.

After the show I usually drink a few beers.

I do not like to drink or eat anything before or during a show, but sometimes I'll make exceptions but only to the point where I will not have to go to the restroom.

I do have a favorite Santana recording from back in the late 70's or early 80's when Schaeffer or Dr Pepper or Miller had moved their NYC concerts to the pier. It was in my "less sedate" years and I used to like to record from the back of the pier where you had a few rows of bleachers and could get up above the crowd noise. At some point your hear a little bit of wind noise followed by the music suddenly somewhat muffled followed by better clarity with a bit of wind noise and then the sound is back to normal. That was the march to the porta-san, a few moments of solitude (holding the mic up to the little window vent) and the march back to my seat. Every time I hear that spot in the recording I can visualize the moment as clear as if it happened yesterday.  ;D :headphones:

The rule of field recording: The recording takes precedence over everything else, find a way...  ;D

Wonder if that was the same taper who liked my TC-153SD at Shoreline '87 and offered to patch me in. Like a fool I said no thanks and that I wanted to use my own (shitty) Superscope EC7 Cardioids! I've never seen that source circulate. He had Neumann TLM-170s >PCM.

I am straight as an arrow when  >:D taping. Don't drink (don't want to pee.) I too am old and have a reduced-capacity bladder. (It's not that I Use Old Neumanns. I'M OLD...and I use Neumanns!) ;)
I gave up smoking at taping events years ago because of making too many mistakes. Same with Mushrooms at OTS Dead shows! 12/28/90 Oakland was a DISASTER because of mushrooms! Never again.

A couple shows I got lucky and the person next to me was able to hold my recorder while I took a restroom break. Most non-open shows anymore, I take my camera in it's small bag and config that up so it sits on a rail or table where i'm sitting, then it's almost like an open show AFA movement etc.

Was that the '99 mini tour where David Lindley & Wally Ingram opened? I did that one at the Santa Barbara County Bowl with my Neumnanns. It was way over 3 hours. I know my 54 year old bladder couldn't handle that now!!! (I never drink anything at least three hours before a show.)

Discretion is the better part . . . .  And all that.  I only tape open and try and moderate my intake during shows.  I limit it to a beer or two max with nothing before the show.  Even at 65, my urinary tract seems to be holding out pretty well after a tune up.
