Title: apogee ad1k battery pack/sd 702 battery pack

just made a new cable to come off of my 702 festy battery pack.  it doesnt get used much, so it was the perfect option.  just wired the cable in series to make 14 volts.  will report back on the run times.   ed

Hey Ed.  When I used my 702, I powered it the same way...that being with RC batteries and that dummy cell. 

However, I don't understand why you wired them in series for 14V rather than leaving them in parallel and running each RC battery at 7.2V.  The Sony M and L series batteries are 7.2V.  Your runs times will be better at the lower voltage.  Not sure but your 702 might run cooler too at the lower voltage.

Note that the specs on the 702 say that external power is 10-18V, but the specs also state that the L and M series batteries are providing 7.2V at the battery posts.

The bottom battery specs are different and I wouldn't try and run it at 14...

Otherwise yeah, your run times will be better seperately using the dummy cell then together using a hirose connector.

FWIW - I would run the AD1000 at as low of V as possible - at 12V or slightly below (I seem to remember the PS1000 running at 11.5V)


The AD1000 runs HOT! already and the higher the voltage the higher potential power converted to additional heat.


I have no idea watch the apogee's power stage looks like, but I would think it's either 12 unregulated-switched or has a linear regulator in front.


The sd7XX series uses a switching convertor on it's input (don't know if it's multistage) - what this means is that the SD702 will pull about the same Watts regardless of the input Voltage.

only the ad1k break-out cable is wired in series, not the 702 power cable.  ed

just found out the ad1k does not like the rc batts(ni-mh)  now that i think about, i think it says that in the manual.  BUT, the dvd bateries do work for the ad1k.  they must hold a higher voltage for longer.  looks like i'm going to keep one of thoese ad1k's i have up in the YS.   ed

Did you fry it?


I am pretty sure there is a fuse (although I believe soldered down) on the power input.  This may help if you wired it up reverse polarity - and thus it would stop working almost immediately.


If the input is unregulated then you need to run as close to 12V as possible as the input range would be very small (possibly 11-13V if not smaller).

anyone know how high of voltage i can run into these? the manual says 15v, but is there more head room?   i run my 6v d8 on 9v dvd bats w/no prob.  will 2, 7.2 dvd bats  wired in series w/5400mah, last longer than, if it can be done, 2 9v dvd bats wired in series w/5400mah??  any help would be great.  ed
