I think to some degree it's the low output of the dpa's, plus the hhb probably does not have a ton. Not to mention the 20 db fixed gain of the m148. Love the sound of the hhb a/d, but just not enough gain there. I'd sand it in to Doug to ramp up the m148 to 30, but afraid of compromising the sound. With the hhb maxed out, only able to get levels slightly above -12, running way fob, very loud for Jenn Hartswick.

20 is the highest Doug will make them. Oade brick's supposedly sound the best when they're ran at lower levels anyway. I feel ya on the 4022>148 situation, though.

Once again, Marc, obviously the answer to your gear frustrations is to swap out those DPAs.

Kev, What was the result when you had the adk @ 10 with the pots all the way up? I guess that would be the max gain you could get?

I still could'nt get enough gain but I did'nt realize it was calibrated that low, though.

guess I'll have to abandon running the hhb a/d. definitely not doing post-work on every show to boost levels. and bluegrass would be impossible. although I will say that running the hhb a/d for the second time, while it is very detailed and in your face, it's a little two-dimensional sounding, kinda compressed, still fabor it over the v3 ANSR, but not the mme. and running the hhb makes me realize that there is still a LOT of mme pre even running line-in. not enough to loosen the low end, but enough to add a kind of film or grain. pleasing, but definitely there.

Not trying to split straws, but Doug has said that the m148 is at its best at 20 (not lower, not higher)...maybe that's what you meant  .

That's what I meant. I was actually thinking about the 248. I know there are a few +6 (m148) versions out, though.
