does any one know what Air Cushioned means? and why you would want it?

air cushioning is a feature with light stands... some have it some don't.

basically, the chambers of fill up with air when the sections are expanded and then the air leaves very slowly once you start to collapse the sections of the stand.

Why have air cushioning?  If you have a heavy, expensive  rig at the top of the stand, you don't want the sections to collapse jostling the bulb (with lighting) or microphones (with audio).  in other words, it is assurance that your stand won't collapse too fast, even if one of the sections becomes loosened. 

The only disadvantage with it is that it takes longer to break down your rig at the end of the night.

Ya, they are nice, especially when you have heavy mics. You dont have to worry about them crashing to the ground!

i've always wanted a bogen 3373 air cush, but no dice.

there cushioned because they are Light stands . the bulbs used for film/camera light's are expensive.
 So if you loosen the switch on you light stand it comes down gently.  And you dont get your sections crashing down , which may damage the bulb...

I wouldn't say it really take's any longer to break down . As soon as I flip the switch , They gently start lowering themself. Takes maybe 2 seconds for it to lower each section.
 There are also rubber "o" rings at each section to help ease the joints meeting..

Both of my stands (8' & 12') are air cusioned.

It's not that much of a disadvantage...kind of like, free insurance, per se.
